#1Posted 20 March 2012 - 01:29 PM Historic Montpelier Motor Speedway Set To Begin 2012 Season When the green flag finally waves on the opening night of the 2012 season, another historic season will be underway for the 109 year old facility as the Montpelier Motor Speedway will begin its 26 consecutive season as a Saturday night dirt track facility. The east central Indiana Speedway, originally built as ½ mile horse track in 1903, began auto racing in 1952 on the Montpelier ½ mile. Harold and Lori Hunter look to continue the tradition as they enter their second year of ownership of the ¼ mile clay facility and forth year of promotion. During the 2011 season, the Hunter’s made major capital improvements at the speedway and again, the speedway will see additional improvements that are ongoing for the 2012 season. The track surface has again received extensive work in the fall of 2011 for preparation for the 2012 season. Construction is set to begin on a new ticket window and pit sign-in window to help speed up entry into the speedway. Pit and track drainage along with extensive back stretch excavation is also completed or slated for completion. New implements have been purchased to aide in working and prepping the track including a machine that will wheel pack and prep the track evenly reducing the need for extensive wheel packing sessions prior to hot laps. Weekly Classes The popular UMP Modifieds will again be on hand again for a total of 31 shows in the 2012 season. Joining the UMP Modifieds weekly will be the Super Streets division which blends street stock style cars from Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan together for a very competitive division. The Thunder Car and Mod Lite divisions will again be on hand weekly throughout the 2012 season. Track Championship During the 2011 season, the Hunter’s paid out over $10,000 in cash along with trophies and prizes at the newly constructed Montpelier Civic Center during the 2011 track banquet. The prestigious track championships for the speedway’s four main divisions and midget class will be hotly contested fueled by over $10,000 in cash and prizes to again be distributed at the conclusion of the 2012 season. The banquet is again slated to be held at the Civic Center and will again honor the top 10 and Rookie of the Years in each division at the conclusion of the 2012 season.
