WAYNESFIELD — The growth of Waynesfield Motor Sports Park continues. After a year of change in 2007, the biggest change for this season has already happened at the 1/3-mile dirt track.
The day-to-day operations of the track will return to some familiar names. Ushering in the fifth year of racing are Greg and Tami Shobe, the owners of the land on which the track is situated.
The Shobes leased the daily operations out to three individuals last season but will resume control this year. But don’t expect the changes made last year — including resurfacing the track, an expanded pit area and new fences — to stop.
“Those people pursued other things, so we’re running it again. We’re familiar with it, I guess,” Greg Shobe said. “There’s really a lot of potential for growth for Waynesfield.”
This biggest improvement this year is in the schedule. Saturday night the season kicks off with the 410 wingless sprints, 600cc mini-sprints and trucks. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps starting at 6 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.
Throughout the year, 360 wing sprints and UMP Late Models will also make appearances. Rounding out the usual shows are the UMP Modifeds
The All-Star 410 sprints make two stops at Waynesfield, the first on June 21, the eve of Ohio Speedweek, and the second on Aug. 13.
“There’s a lot of guys who like to run two times a week. With the cost of transportation, a lot of people are going to stay closer to home. We have quite a nucleus of race cars within a 100-mile radius,” Shobe said.
There is one omission from that list, the stock cars. While it was a difficult decision, Shobe made it based on the number of classes that make up a normal Saturday night and the time it took to get everything in.
Unfortunately for the drivers and fans, the stocks were left out.
“We were running too many classes and our programs were getting too long,” Shobe said. “It was a tough decision to make, probably not one of the smartest ideas.”

Personally... I would replace the 600cc minis with Stock Cars... but that's just me.

There's room for everybody! Stocks are a proving grounds for Crate, Mod, and LM's.
600 Mini's are a proving ground for midgets and sprints.
They are all of equal value in my eyes, and they are all going to have a place to race at Waynesfield!

The mini sprints put the fastest show on there that is proven time and time again they are at least a 1 sec. to 1 1/2 faster than any thing one the track

just because they turn faster lap times doesn't make for better racing. they never have to lift. we see who has the most motor. take the wings off and see who can race. bolt a wing on any other car and they'll be faster too.The mini sprints put the fastest show on there that is proven time and time again they are at least a 1 sec. to 1 1/2 faster than any thing one the track
