I-30 Speedway’s 17th Annual Short Track Nationals Approaches

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 14, 2003) – In just a few short weeks, nearly 100 of the nation’s top Sprint Car drivers will converge upon Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway as Hoosier Tires presents the 17th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals on Thursday through Saturday, October 28-30.

This year’s edition of the prestigious event atop the high-banked, quarter-mile clay oval will offer $15,000-to-win, with $1,700 just to start the Saturday night STN finale.

It will be an action-packed three nights of racing as each driver vies to join the impressive list of past Short Track Nationals champions, which includes defending race champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, the only driver to win the STN on more than one occasion since the event became the nation’s premier 360-ci showcase in 1993. Wright topped a stout field of 81 competitors last year to collect his third STN crown, also scoring wins in 1995 and 1999.

Other past winners include Paul McMahan (2002), Jason Sides (2001), Mike Ward (2000), Tim Crawley (1998), Wayne Johnson (1997), Pete Butler (1996), Terry Gray (1994) and John Gerloff (1993).

Steve Kinser (1988, ’89 and ’91) and Sammy Swindell (1990) claimed early renditions of the Short Track Nationals when it was a 410-ci event. The 1992 finale was rained out.

The qualifying programs for this year’s edition of the Short Track Nationals will have an added flare, as the popular Sprint Bandits qualifying procedure will be in effect for the Thursday and Friday night qualifiers. On both nights, heat races will be lined up according to the draw, with the passing points system in use. A like number of qualifying races will then be contested with the lineups fully inverted based on heat race passing points. The top 20 in combined passing points from both heat and qualifying race action will qualify for the preliminary features, with the top two A Feature finishers on each night locked into Saturday night’s “Pack’s Dash for Cash”, which will determine their starting position in the $15,000-to-win finale.

Aside from the four drivers locked into the finale, all other drivers will start from scratch on Saturday night, battling through a full program of heat races, C Features and B Features to acquire one of the 16 remaining starting positions for the October 30 STN main event.

ASCS rules will be in effect, with mufflers mandatory (Schoenfeld 112535-no gutting). The weight rule of 1,475 pounds with the driver will be enforced, while the Hoosier medium/hard spec tire must be used on the right rear with any Hoosier tire utilized on the left rear.

Drivers planning on taking part as Hoosier Tires presents the 17th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible. Entry fee is $150 if postmarked by October 20. After that date, the entry fee is $250, with no exceptions. Entry forms may be obtained at www.i-30speedway.com or by calling the track at 501-455-4567
