“By Jim Fisher: Ohio driver Jared Horstman claimed his first career winged sprint victory at Butler (Mi.) Speedway on July 4. The track celebrated the holiday with a fireworks display and remembered Joshua Hadley in the 2nd annual Joshua Hadley Memorial.
The 25-lap winged sprint feature went non-stop, with Horstman coming from the third row for the victory.
Mark Broughman and Doug Zimmerman made up the front row, with Zimmerman leading the field until just past the midway point when Horstman and Broughman were able to slip past. Horstman made his way to third by lap 5, and got by Broughman for second on lap 11. He led the final 12 laps after getting past Zimmerman.
Broughman, last season's points champion, was second at the checker. Jeff "Longhair" Rankin came from a 11th-place starting spot to take third, while Zimmerman was fourth and Ken Mackey was fifth. The rest of the top 10 were Gregg Dalman, Trey Smith, Cameron Spieth, Troy Chehowski, and Aaron Smith.
Sprint car heat races were won by Horstman, Zimmerman, and Ryan Ruhl. The 'B' Main went to Daryl Shaffer.
The track will play host to the Butler Sprint Car Spectacular on July 11. The event will pay $1200 to the winner and $800 for second. The previously announced All Star event has been dropped from the schedule.
