Henning, Hall, Twining, and Kimes pick up victories on moist night at Waynesfield. May 16, 2010 Waynesfield, OH Mother Nature has been particularly brutal to racing at Waynesfield Raceway Park the last few weeks, and she tried to wreak havoc Saturday night once again. The drivers, crews, staff and fans at WRP persevered and were rewarded with a racetrack that ended up being lightning fast all night long, making for great racing for all of those who braved the light rain that fell off and on all evening. In the Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini-Sprints, a great field of cars turned out to do battle on the 1/3 mile bullring. Jeff Barnhart was able to jump out to an early lead from the outside pole starting spot with Nick Daugherty, “Hot” Rod Henning, and Kevin Roberts close in tow. Just as Daugherty began to close up to Barnhart the caution flag waved on the speedway. On the ensuing restart, “Hot” Rod Henning made a daring move on the high side, getting by both Barnhart and Daugherty at the same time. Henning was able to pull away enough in the final laps to pick up the victory with Jeff Barnhart coming home second, Nick Daugherty third, Kevin Roberts fourth, and Beau Stewart completing the top 5. Wapak Ohio’s Devon Dobie provided provided lots of excitement in the A Main, charging through the field from his starting spot on the outside of the ninth row, making it as high as sixth position before going for a wild ride over the backstretch berm and flipping out of sight of the fans. Devon was able to walk away and will be hard at work in the coming days to get back on the track in the family owned Astro Lanes sponsored #23. Heat races were won by Henning, Ryan Broughton, and Kevin Roberts. The Ohio Cycleworx 360 Sprints were next to hit the track and speed was the word for the evening. With the light rain that persisted, the clay stayed super tacky and the 360s used it to their advantage. In feature action Luke Hall was able to jump out to an early lead with Mike Dussel, Hud Horton, and Tim Allison in tow. It appeared as “Mr. Excitement” was going to begin his charge to the front before taking a wicked flip in turn 4 ending the 2009 Ohio Cycleworx 360 Sprint Champion’s evening on the hook. When racing resumed, it was all Luke Hall out front, with Mike Dussel able to close to within a car length a couple times, but Luker was able to knife his way through lapped traffic with ease and pick up the win. Hall was followed by Dussel, Hud Horton, Jared Horstman, and JR Stewart. Heat races were won by Allison, and Jeff Williams. In Miracle Motorsports Tuff Truck action, the racing was fast and furious, a friendly rivalry get a little more heated, and a legend returned to the racetrack. In heat race action, Jerry Butler was able to run away with the first heat in strong fashion, setting himself up for a great starting spot in the feature. Heat one also featured the return of 88 year old George Place to racing action. George has long been a fixture in racing around Ohio and it was awesome to see him strap in and take on the ranks of the Tuff Trucks last night. Heat 2 was a barnburner with the top three rows running side by side for the first 5 laps of the race. This side by side racing had to give, and it did in a big way as the 1w of “Fat” Matt Twining, and the 71 of “The Juggernaut” Chris Hicks Making contact as the field fanned out 4 wide to get around a lapped truck. The contact was enough to bring out the caution and Hicks finished the heat race with no sheet metal left on the drivers side of the cockpit of the Snake Thunder Racing Engines #71. Hicks and Twining restarted from the tail and were unable to challenge the winner of Heat 2, “Hippy” Bill Keeler. Heat 3 featured the return of Jessica Nuss to racing action. Motor problems and other priorities forced Jessica to take the latter part of 2009 off, so it was great to see the return of one of the fan favorites in the Tuff Trucks. Mike Hicks jumped out to the lead from his inside pole starting spot and picked up the heat win, setting up the feature. In the A Main, it was Heat 2 all over again as the first several rows raced side by side throughout the opening laps. The 1x of Jerry Butler was able to knife his way through the throng of great racing to grab the top spot for most of the first half of the feature, but Mike Hicks and Matt Twining had other plans for the night they too battled their way through the side by side racing. As the battle for the lead heated up, the #33 truck of “The Enforcer” Mike Hicks came to a stop at the exit of turn four with apparent rear end issues and a flat tire. Hicks would say later he thought some contact from the 1w of “Fat” Matt Twining may have contributed to the damage. When racing resumed, Twining was able to get by the 1x of Butler, and he had company following. The #71 “JuggaRocket” of Chris Hicks reeled in Twining, but ran out of laps, as “Fat” Matt picked up his second win of the young season, with Chris Hicks second, Jerry Butler third, Shawn Jacobs fourth and Jamie Davis rounding out the top 5. The friendly rivalry between the Hicks and the Twinings may prove to be a focal point for the 2010 season, and will definitely be fun to watch. \ In JR ands Sons Service Center Compact action, it was Harvey Yoder jumping out to an early lead in his Wyss Farms sponsored #82 just slightly over the #79 of Brian Beach. Justin Durflinger powered by and took the lead on lap 3. 2009 JR and Sons Service Center Compacts Champion “The Jet” Jeff Kimes began to march through the field and close in on the leader and make his move with 4 laps remaining The yellow flag waved for the #79 of Brian Beach and the #1j off JJ Butler, setting up a 3 lap dash to the finish. It was Kimes holding off Durflinger for the win, but Durflinger was docked 2 spots at the end of the event for jumping the final restart. That gave second to Harvey Yoder, Jordan Iiams coming home third, Durflinger credited with fourth, and Ethan Pope fifth. Waynesfield Raceway Park is back in action next Saturday May 22nd, featuring the return of “Chase for the Case” for the Lee’s Hydraulics Non Wing Sprints, Post Agri-Service UMP Modifieds, JR and Sons Service Center Compacts, and Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks. Come out and see if a lucky driver can pick up a little something extra out of one of three cases next Saturday May 22nd. Pit Gates open at 4PM, Grandstand gates at 5PM, Hot laps at 6:15, Racing at 7PM. Come see why we say “Dirt Track Racing’s Best Kept Secret is Now Out. Good car count? There were no B mains ran how does that qualify as a good car count. Granted there were a lot more mini sprints there this time but im gonna have to say no one else running them this past saturday was the reason for that. Hopefully some of them liked the track and keep coming back. But only 16 360s were there and once again not a lot of compacts. Im not trying to start anything but the compacts should be dropped from WRP no one ever shows up to them only 2 guys even stand a chance of winning and really now all it seems they do is take up time toss them and put the mods on the schedule more

I figured you meant the mini sprints and i was very happy to see a big count for them saturday night. And i was at Limaland friday night and there were a lot of torn up cars. I would have to say that with it not being an NRA race that is prolly a lot of the reason why some 360s didnt make it to WRP. But either way there was some great racing this past weekend and im glad to see no one got hurt especially Dobbie with his nasty ride and Delong with his nasty one friday night

Let the compacs run even if there are a few of them , they are a great fill in class. It gives time to some in the pits to work on their cars and get ready for their next race. I think the fans would rather watch them run their heat race rather than to have a break in the action. They only run one heat during the night and they are usually the last feature to run. It a shame that people leave and dont watch them run. Every one of these guys are low budget racers to them their cars are just as important to them as every one else and their cars. Even if the same one wins, those guys running back in the pack are proably having more fun than those like me who are sitting back watching. Not trying to start any thing either but what are they hurting, if you dont want to watch them take a break go to the restroom or get some thing to eat. The car counts and stands will get better the weather is hurting every one. Ive heard that some of the other tracks are to. Heard Eldora took a hit on the WoO show, and fremont sat night heard their crowd was down some. The main thing is support what every track you choose to go to and what every class is running. All tracks fans and car counts will get better. Just enjoy your night of watching or racing were ever you choose.
