1st Annual Memorial Classic sees Stewart, C. Hicks, Daugherty, and Durflinger in victory lane.,
May 30, 2010
Waynesfield, OH
On a beautiful Saturday to kick off the summer, Waynesfield Raceway Park held the 1st Annual Memorial Classic sponsored by Block Insurance Agency, featuring the NRA 360 Sprints taking on the ASCS/SOD 360s, along with the Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks, Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini Sprints, and JR and Sons Service Center Compacts.
Kicking off the action was the Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks with Matt Twining able to jump out front early and lead a considerable portion of the feature event. The battle for the runner-up spot was fast and furious, until the #71 of Chris Hicks fought his way past his spinning brother Mike in the #33 to grab the 2nd spot and set his sights on the #1w of “Fat” Matt Twining. In the closing laps, Twining and Hicks put on a side by side duel for the lead with Chris Hicks picking up the win, over Matt Twining, Gabe Twining finished a very strong 3rd in the Weasel Racing #25G after motor problems nearly kept him from coming to the track at all, #18N Derrick Noffsinger finished 4th and Jerry Butler completed the top 5.
Next to hit the track was the Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini Sprint A Main. #4L Jeff Long, and #65 Chris Bounds led the field down to the green flag with the #22b of Brad Racer getting a great run into turns 1 and 2 to grab the lead for a moment, but it was the #7R of Nick Daugherty that was the class of the field. The closing laps saw the #23 of Devon Dobie begin to close in, but the laps ran out and Daugherty grabbed the checkers. Dobie came home second, with #5 “Mad” Max Stambaugh third, #65 Chris Bounds grabbing fourth with a 600cc power plant under the hood, and defending Mini-Sprint track champion Garry Loney in fifth.
The National Racing Alliance versus the American Sprint Car Series/Sprints on Dirt 360 sprint showdown was next on the high banks. Pole sitter “Mr. Excitement” Tim Allison jumped out to the early race lead aboard his Texas Roadhouse, Smitty’s Contracting, Ohio Cycleworx #11. Allison led for several laps with #6s JR Stewart and #2m Dustin Daggett hanging in striking distance until Allison had to get on the binders to try and miss a lapped car that had come to a stop in turn 4. That handed the lead to Stewart, the defending NRA champion with #2m Dustin Daggett, the perennial favorite with the ASCS/SOD close in tow. Daggett was able to take a stab at Stewart a couple of times, but the loss of momentum saw the #B20 of Butch Schroeder able to slip by and grab the runner up spot. In the end JR Stewart grabbed the win and the $2000 top prize in the Tim Hogan’s Dalton Georgia Carpet Outlet #6s, followed by Schroeder, Daggett, #28h Hud Horton, and #17 Jared “The Hurricane” Horstman finishing fifth.
Completing racing action was the JR and Sons Service Center Compacts. The field was a little short on cars, but not on action as the #17 of Justin Durflinger battled side by side nearly the entire race with the #31 of defending track champion Jeff Kimes, with the #7 of Ethan Pope, and the #71 of Brian Beach showing that they are going to start making things interesting for the Kimes/Durflinger teams before the season is over. In the end Durflinger was able to pick up the win over Kimes, Pope was third, Beach fourth, and Jordan Iiams fifth in the #58i.
