Ohio vs. Michigan Shootout featuring the Lees Hydraulic Sprints and Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints
Dobie, Pope, Westfall and M. Twining pick up victories at Waynesfield
WAYNESFIELD, Ohio
June 19, 2010
Summer doesn’t officially start until Monday, but the weather was already hot and humid, while the action on the racetrack was even hotter Saturday night when the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints invaded Waynesfield Raceway Park to take on the Lee’s Hydraulics Non Wing Sprints in what has is becoming an annual Ohio vs. Michigan Shootout. Along with the Non Wing Sprints, the Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini Sprints , JR and Sons Service Center Compacts, and Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks were also in action.
In Fowler and Hadding 1000cc Mini Sprint feature action, the race was marred by a wild accident entering turn one on the 1st lap. The accident claimed some of the heavy hitters in the field including #28h “Hot” Rod Henning, #43 Ron Durrer Jr., #22r Kevin Roberts Jr., #74 Lynsey Tilton, #4r Nick Roberts, and #27 Beau Stewart. #74 of Lynsey Tilton was the only vehicle able to continue, all of the other drivers were able to accompany their vehicles back to the pit area, with the exception of #27 Beau Stewart who was awake and responding to medical personnel, but was transported to a local medical facility for observation. Reports at time of press release stated that Stewart was treated and released with a slight concussion. Good news after a very scary accident. When the race resumed with a complete restart, #00 of Mike Helterbran was able to get a great start from his outside front row starting position and pull away from second place running #23 of Devon Dobie. #7r of Nick Daugherty got hung up behind a slower car on the restart allowing Helterbran and Dobie to get away for several laps. In the end Devon Dobie was able to fight his way to the lead in the Astro Lanes, Darby Building Supplies, Allan Nott sponsored #23 and grab the feature win, but not before Daugherty could take one final stab with 2 laps remaining. The top five ended up Dobie, Daugherty, #24L of Lee Underwood came home third, with Helterbran, and the #4k of Kevin Roberts Sr. rounding out the top five. Heat races were won by #47 Garry Loney, #4R Nick Roberts and #5 Max Stambaugh
The JR and Sons Service Center Compacts have been dominated by Piqua Ohio’s Jeff Kimes and Bellefontaine Ohio’s Justin Durflinger since the return of the 4 cylinder warriors in 2009. Last night was looking the same until the emergence of a new force to be reckoned with in the form of Ethan Pope. Pope took off from his starting spot on the pole and never looked back as both Kimes and Durflinger tried to find a way to run down the red and black machine that led them to the finish. It was Pope’s first feature win at Waynesfield, in a vehicle owned by Durflinger Racing that oddly enough originally came from Jeff Kimes! The compact division is getting more competitive every week, and is a great way to get started in racing as 15 year old Nick Kelly found out. Nick Kelly, the son of former Tuff Truck racer turned Raceceiver operator at WRP, Dan Kelly, got the chance to run for the very first time thanks to Jerry Butler and all the folks at JR and Sons Service Center who prepared the vehicle. Kelly came home a respectable 9th place in his first race, and showed remarkable poise behind the wheel for someone who has never been behind the wheel before. The top five were Pope, Kimes, Durflinger, #82 Harvey Yoder, and #518 of Jordan Iiams. Heat Races were won by Durflinger and Kimes.
The Ohio vs. Michigan Shootout featuring the Lee’s Hydraulics Non Wing Sprints taking on the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints saw a very special entrant in the A Main as racing legend Jack Hewitt took lucky fan Justin Lobdell for the ride of a lifetime, starting 21st in the back seat of Jack’s specially prepared 2 seat sprint car. When the green flag fell it was Leipsic, Ohio’s Mike Brecht in the yellow #8 taking off in the lead from his starting spot on the pole. The racing was hot and heavy battling throughout the pack, but Pleasant Hill, Ohio’s Matt Westfall made his presence known, charging from his sixth place starting spot to second, setting his sights on race leader Brecht. As the 25 lap feature neared the halfway point, Westfall made his move taking the lead from Brecht and setting sail, until lap 15, as the #31 of Chuck Wilson found himself facing the wrong way on the backstretch, bringing out the yellow flag. When racing resumed, Matt Westfall once again showed his mastery of the high banks at Waynesfield taking off and leaving the field. Meanwhile, the battle for second stayed hot throughout the waning laps between Brecht, Thomas Messeraul in the Hazen #57, #5j Joss Moffatt, and #41 Steve Ott. In the end it was Westfall grabbing the win over Moffatt, Brecht, Ott and Messeraul. Heat races were won by Messeraul, Ott, Westfall and Moffatt. B Mains were won by Jamie Miller and Mike Galajda.
The Miracle Motorsports Tuff Trucks wrapped up action for the evening, with defending track champion “Fat” Matt Twining finding himself starting the feature from 18th after having problems in his heat race, setting the stage for one of the most exciting finishes in Waynesfield history. “The Juggernaut” Chris Hicks wasted no time charging to the lead from his starting spot outside row number 2 in his Snake Thunder Racing Engines #71. The battle for 2nd saw trucks 2, 3, and even 4 wide at times as #1x Jerry Butler, #26 Jessica Nuss, #33 Mike Hicks, #37 Roy Miller #25G “Bee Badd” Gabe Twining and others battled hard throughout the race. While all these trucks battled, defending track champion Matt Twining earned the “Where did he come from?” award for the night, charging up to join the front runners with laps winding down. With just 3 laps to go, the driver of the Village Café #1w cleared the pack and set his sights on race leader Chris Hicks. When the white flag flew, Twining was right on the back bumper of Hicks. Down the back stretch the leaders split a lapped truck with Hicks up high and Twining on the bottom. As they came out of turn 4 for the final time, Twining capped a remarkable charge from 18th to pick up the win. In victory lane, Matt gave an emotional interview thanking his Dad, Rick “Weasel” Twining for preparing the trucks that he and brother Gabe drive every week at Waynesfield. Chris Hicks came home second, with #33 Mike hicks third, #26 Jessica Nuss fourth and #25 Gabe Twining rounding out the top 5. Heat races were won by Chris Hicks, Jessica Nuss, and Jerry Butler. A scary moment in heat 2 as #0h of Kaci Taylor and #CO1 of Jerry Sawmiller got together and went airborne over the backstretch berm exiting turn 2. Both drivers were able to walk away under their own power, but were done racing for the evening.
