FINAL MONTH OF COMPETITION FOR PACE PERFORMANCE “FUTURES CUP”; 2ND TRIFECTA RACE SATURDAY AT SHARON
By Mike Leone
September 7, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Pulaski, PA)…The second year of the Pace Performance FASTRAK Northeast “Futures Cup” program is winding down. With the calendar changing to September, just one month of competition remains until the 2012 champion is crowned at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex during the “Fall Fest” weekend.
Coming up this Saturday (September 8) at Sharon Speedway is the second “Trifecta” race, which pits the eligible “Futures Cup” racers in their own race that adds points to their “best 15” scores. The race will pay $200 to-win with a payout for each competing racer in addition to Saturday’s “Weekly Series” event, which figures into drivers’ “best 15” finishes. Drivers will be permitted to utilize the Hoosier FT200 on the right rear for this event, but will have to run the FT400 during the night’s regular program. The rain date for this event will be next Friday, September 14.
There’s no denying the impact and buzz the inaugural “Futures Cup” program created in 2011 with Ryan Montgomery winning the championship on the final night. The Class of 2012 contenders have been battling it out on the track throughout the spring and summer months with their eye on the title- this year presented by Pace Performance. The top Pace Performance “Futures Cup” racers will be honored at the 2012 FASTRAK Northeast Awards Banquet, where this year’s champion will again receive $1,000.
On July 7, Nico Dabecco passed Lauren Longbrake on the final lap for the “Trifecta” race one win at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Last year, Newt Tackett, Longbrake, and Montgomery were the “Trifecta” winners, and with Dabecco scoring round one, there have been four different winners in four races.
With his second win last Friday in Weekly Series action at Humberstone Speedway, Jorden Peters of Stevensville, Ontario, Canada has taken over the point lead for the first time this season. He leads Dabecco by just four points. Besides his “Trifecta” win at Pittsburgh, Dabecco also won his first career feature at “The Monster Half-Mile” on June 23 and won a non-qualifier race during a Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC Northeast Touring event at Sharon Speedway on August 18.
Early point leader, Cody Dawson of Westover, Maryland has dropped to third in points. Dawson has an amazing seven runner-up finishes at New Egypt (NJ) Speedway, but has yet been able to break into victory lane. Shane Weaver, Eric Wilson, Longbrake, Breyton Santee, Clay Ruffo, and Jordan Keruskie, a feature winner at Can-Am, follow in the standings. A total of 11 different racers from six different states are part of this year’s “Futures Cup” class.
Wilson is one driver looking to improve in the standings on Saturday at his home track. Last year, the then 14-year-old Cortland, Ohio driver just missed out on the top 10 paying positions finishing 11th. The third generation racer was able to win a feature at Sharon in his rookie season and has since added a second career victory last month at Sharon!
“These youngsters never cease to amaze me,” expressed sixth year Northeast Co-Director Vicki Emig. “When you watch these kids compete week after week with some of the best FASTRAK racers in the country you find yourself forgetting how young they really are. Last year’s champion Ryan Montgomery has graduated to one of our top Touring drivers already and look how many of these past and present Futures Cup racers have already won feature events! There’s no doubt that they will continue to develop into some of the best our region has to offer in upcoming years. We are thankful to Pace Performance for stepping up this year to support this program.”
