By Mike Leone
September 12, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Hartford, OH)…After the season’s longest downtime, the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC Pace Performance FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series is set to resume action at Sharon Speedway this weekend. Sharon hosted the Series’ last event on August 18 for the wildly successful “Manufacturers Night”. Saturday’s stop will be the fifth and final of the season at the Hartford, Ohio oval and marks race #20 of 25.
The annual “Apple Festival Nationals” will also feature the FASTRAK Late Models in a complete Weekly Series show on Friday night paying $1,000 to-win. Then on Saturday, a complete new program will be run for the Northeast Touring Series with $1,200 on the line.
In addition, Friday night will also include the second of three “Trifecta” races for the Pace Performance “Futures Cup”. Nico Dabecco of Pittsburgh won the first race at Pittsburgh on July 6 and also leads the $1,000 to-win “Futures Cup” standings by 14 over Canadian Jorden Peters. The “Trifecta” race, open to all eligible “Futures Cup” racers, will pay $200 to-win and offer additional points on top of racers’ “best 15” finishes.
“The Apple Festival Nationals Weekend is always a great event for FASTRAK,” stated sixth year Northeast Co-Director Vicki Emig. “Sharon has become a big supporter of FASTRAK and allowed the Touring Series to be showcased five times this year. This will be the fourth year FASTRAK has been part of the Apple Festival tradition. It gives our racers the ability to run two complete shows at the same facility, while not requiring them to come both nights. We’re looking forward next weekend and our first ever back-to-back Touring shows at the same facility at McKean County Raceway.”
Max Blair is six events away for claiming his fourth championship in five years. The 22-year-old Centerville, Pa. driver is having another record-breaking season with an all-time high nine wins on the Tour amongst his career best 30 victories.
Blair currently leads Chad Ruhlman by 73 points. Ruhlman won his career first FASTRAK race at Pittsburgh on July 6. He’s having a strong first year on the Tour with 7 top 5s and 15 top 10s. At Sharon, Ruhlman has done quite well with a pair of thirds, a fifth, a sixth, and a tenth.
Mike Pegher, Jr., who ended a victory drought at the last Sharon event that dated back to April 20, is third in points, 20 behind Ruhlman. Dan Angelicchio has an eight-point advantage on last year’s “Futures Cup” champion, Ryan Montgomery for the fourth spot. Completing the top 10 are John Over, Butch Lambert, Sharon point leader Will Thomas III, Sharon runner-up point man Matt Latta, and “Futures Cup” racer Shane Weaver.
The Northeast Touring Series has been featured 15 times at Sharon over the past four seasons with eight different winners. Blair, who swept the Bill Emig Memorial Wild Card Weekend, is a four-time winner, while Josh Holtgraver, Joe Martin, and Pegher are the only other repeat winners. Other Touring winners at Sharon include David Scott, the late Gary Knollinger, George Kowatic, Montgomery, and Sammy Stile.
The “Wheelman” Bonus Event Challenge Series for non-qualifiers will be held in addition, if necessary. Jason Genco (two), Craig Dean (two), Louie Krushansky, Bob Dorman, Junior Peters, Kyle Wiser, Joel Prosser, Jamie Brown, Bobby Pifer, and Nico Dabecco have picked up the non-qualifier wins to date, while W.L. Stile leads the points. An amazing 25 different drivers have scored victories in the 32 races run all-time.
Of course all of the great contingency programs will be in full force. Besides the K&N “Cold Air Induction Dash” and fan giveaway, the Brake Man “Tough Brake of the Night”, Genesis Shocks “Top Dog of the Night”, Precise Racing Products “Pedal Down” Hard Charger, and the Utsinger’s Towing Hoosier Tire Giveaway will also take place.
There have been 92 Northeast Touring Series races contested with 34 different winners all-time. Max Blair leads nemesis Mike Pegher, Jr. 21 to 15 followed by Dick Barton, Bobby Powell, John Lacki, and David Scott with four, Steve Dixon, Josh Holtgraver and Joe Martin at three, Alan Dellinger, Dan Angelicchio, Robbie Blair, Ryan Montgomery, Will Thomas III, and Wayne Robertson with two, and Todd Andrews, Kyle Drum, Frank Guidace, Butch Lambert, Carl McKinney, Dennis Lunger, Jr., Tom Snyder, Jr., Chris Meadows, Jim Frank, Mike Blose, Jonathan Davenport, Gary Knollinger, Dusty Hamrick, Bud Watson, Russell King, George Kowatic, Chad Ruhlman, Matt Latta & Sammy Stile with one victory.
