MAX BLAIR COMES OUT ON TOP OF A STELLAR 49-CAR FIELD FOR HIS RECORD 10TH WIN DURING A WET 3-DAY “FALL CLASSIC”
By Mike Leone
September 23, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(East Smethport, PA)…The Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC Pace Performance FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series headed to McKean County Raceway for the annual “Fall Classic” Weekend. Unfortunately Mother Nature spun up showers and thunderstorms all weekend long. Instead of two complete events on Friday and Saturday, it took three days to get in Friday’s race #21 that brought out 49 competitors from all over Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, West Virginia, and Ontario, Canada.
Rain showers hit following the completion of heat races on Friday. After waiting over an hour, and with rain continuing to fall and due to the lateness of the hour, the decision was made to complete the show on Sunday at 2 p.m. Saturday saw rain fall during the morning hours and with wet weather expected during the evening the decision was made to cancel the racing action. No date has been an announced for a possible make-up. Sunday’s weather was more October-like with lake effect showers and windy conditions, but through it all Friday’s program was able to be salvaged.
Max Blair drew the pole position and kept his car planted on the bottom as he was never challenged leading all 25 laps of the feature for his record-setting 10th win of the season. Blair survived four restarts and the typical daytime track conditions for the $1,200 victory and also received the $100 Genesis “Top Dog of the Night” certificate.
Blair took off when the green flag waved on the fourth Tour event of the season at McKean. Brad Kling dropped in behind Blair in second, while Matt Latta got a great start passing both Mike Pegher, Jr. and John Over for the third spot on the opening lap. Pegher would regain fourth on lap two from Over.
Blair quickly pulled away, while the battle was on for second. Seventh starting Chad Ruhlman moved into the top five with a pass of Over on lap four. It was now a four-car race for second with Kling trying to fend off Latta, Pegher, and Ruhlman. Brad Mesler spun and brought out the first caution with eight laps recorded.
When racing resumed, it was three-wide for second as Kling somehow was able to hold on to the spot. Ruhlman passed Pegher for fourth on lap 10, but Pegher took back the spot one lap later. Latta began to challenge Kling as he pulled alongside on lap 12 only to see the caution fly for Over with 12 laps scored.
The caution was a huge break for Pegher as when racing got back underway, Latta came up lame with a flat tire as Pegher was also able to pass Kling to overtake second. Ruhlman charged by Kling and Latta as he assumed third. A four-car accident took place involving Justin Smith, Shane Weaver, Mesler, and Over with 13 laps in the books.
Dennis Lunger, Jr. had raced from 10th into fifth and when green replaced yellow, passed both Kling and Ruhlman for third before Garrett Mott slowed action bringing out the fourth and final caution with 14 laps recorded. The last 11 laps would go caution-free and pretty uneventful. Pegher closed in on Blair in the final laps, but wouldn’t get close enough to apply and pressure. Thankfully for Blair he didn’t have to deal with any lapped traffic over the course of the event.
The victory was the 22-year-old Centerville, Pa. driver’s all-time leading 22nd of his career in Northeast Touring Series competition in his Specialty Products/Rohrer Trucking/Moody & Son Welding/Genesis Shocks-sponsored #111 as he closes in on his fourth Tour title in five years.
Pegher’s second place finish was his fifth runner-up and 12th top five of the season. Lunger’s third place effort was his second top five in just five starts this year, but best finish since his only career win on July 3, 2009 at Raceway 7. Ruhlman’s fourth place was his eighth top five of the season as he was able to keep pace with Pegher in the battle for runner-up in the standings.
After running just two of the first 16 races, Bryce Davis has joined the Tour for four of the last five races and has been impressive. It started with a career best runner-up at Black Rock on August 11, a third at McKean on August 16, a fourth at Sharon on September 15, and now a fifth on Sunday for his fourth straight top five! Davis and sixth finishing Ryan Montgomery were both able to pass Kling in the closing laps. Kling dropped to seventh, but was easily his best finish after posting three prior 13th place finishes during his first year on the Tour.
Paul Grigsby is another racer that has joined the Tour for four of the last five events and netted his best finish in eighth. Butch Lambert was ninth for his ninth top 10 finish of the season and moved him up to seventh in the standings. Jason Genco completed the top 10 and earned the $100 Precise Racing Products “Pedal Down” Hard Charger for advancing the most positions at 11.
Amazingly 21 cars finished on the lead lap as Garrett Mott was the final one, and received the Utsinger’s Towing free Hoosier Tire. Canadian Luke Carleton made his first Tour start of the season and a flat tire early on netted him The Brake Man’s “Tough Brake of the Night”.
Justin Tatlow ended the event picking up his second career non-qualifier victory. The 10-lap win was worth $125 for the Franklinville, New York racer. Tatlow moved into second past Justin Kreider on the opening lap as Bruno Mowery took the early advantage. Jamie Brown started in fifth and worked his way to third on lap two past Kreider. Brown then overtook Tatlow on a lap three restart following a spin by Kreider, but Tatlow regained second the following lap.
Tatlow would make the winning move on lap six following a restart as he used the outside to pass Mowery. Tatlow led the final five laps in the Lewy Kratts-owned, Ungermann Excavating/Mapes Sand & Gravel/Pioneer Propane/Lewy’s Tire/DJ Buttsy/P56 Wraps-sponsored #81. Mowery was second in his first ever Tour second. Brown was third for his fifth top five in non-qualifier events as he continues to be second in the “Wheelman” Bonus Event Challenge Series points behind W.L. Stile. Dave Norton, Jr. came from ninth to finish fourth over Zack Carley.
Heat winners back on Friday were Davis, Over, Chad Wright, Pegher, and Blair. On Sunday, Grigsby won his first K&N “Cold Air Induction” Dash and earned the $100 certificate and 11th place starting spot. Montgomery picked up the $50 K&N certificate for second. Ed Carley, Weaver, and Ward Schell received $25 cash for finishing third through fifth. Brad Mesler and Genco won Sunday’s B mains. The 49 cars matched the McKean record back on July 6 for the Original Pizza Logs Speedweek event.
