Brian Weaver honored as 2012 Point Champion at Modified Tour Awards Banquet
Grove City, PA………The BRP Modified Tour held its annual Awards Banquet to honor the 2012 Modified Tour Champion, Brian Weaver of Windsor, NY as well as the other top twenty point drivers Saturday night at Big Daddy’s Speed Center in Grove City, PA.
Over $23,000 in cash was distributed to the top twenty point drivers with Brian Weaver taking the top honor and top prize money of $4,000 for the nine race series the Modified Tour had in 2012. Along with the cash there was also another $5,000 in contingency awards distributed to the drivers as well.
Brian Weaver traveled the six-plus hours from his home town of Windsor, NY along with car owner Ron Dieffenbach to compete in each event during the season. Weaver had five heat race wins to his credit, 5 top 5 finishes and 3 top ten finishes on his way to the championship and finished the season with a grand total of 405 points. With the help of friends, Kevin and John Hoffman, Brian was able to run each event after blowing his own motor at his local track. The Hoffman’s lent him a car for one event as well as an engine for a large portion of the races. Weaver and Dieffenbach received 2012 Championship Modified Tour jackets and Weaver’s wife, Nicole was given an official Modified Tour blanket.
Finishing second to Weaver was Dave Murdick of Butler, PA who had four heat race wins, two feature wins at Expo Speedway and Mercer Raceway Park, three top five finishes and two top ten finishes but came up short in the point category with 388 points.
Third place went to the 2011 Point Champion Rex King, Sr. of Bristolville, OH who had two feature wins during the season at Eriez Speedway and Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway along with two top five finishes and three top ten finishes and rounded out the season with 383 points.
Fourth place went to Jeremiah Shingledecker of Polk, PA who won three heat races, had two top five finishes and five top ten finishes and ended up with 373 points for the season.
Kevin Hoffman, Franklin, PA rounded out the top five with two heat race wins, his first ever Modified Tour feature win at Dog Hollow Speedway, two top five finishes and three top ten finishes with a total of 367 points.
Sixth through tenth in points were Rex King, Jr., and Joe Kubiniec who traveled from his home in Lockport, NY to attend our races. Eighth went to Steve Feder who picked up his first career feature win ever at Sharon Speedway. Ninth place went to Chris Haines with tenth place going to Mike Turner.
Mark Frankhouser, Brad Rapp, Shawn Fleeger, Carl Murdick, Eric Gabany, Randy Chrysler, Rick Ryder, Ron Cartwright, Jr., Skip Moore and J.R. McGinley rounded out the top twenty.
Special Awards were given to Rex King, Sr. for the Hard Charger Award who received a complete Front Bert Hub Rex passed the most cars during the season mainly due to the newly formed handicapped line-up system. The Hard Luck Award went to the George Snider team with driver Rick Ryder who received a new Racequip Helmet. Most Improved Driver Award went to Shawn Fleeger who picked up a new Racequip Firesuit. The Debbie Oyler Memorial Award of a new pair of Racequip Racing Shoes went to Joe Kubiniec. Debbie Oyler was a former member of the Modified Tour board who passed away two years ago and made a lasting impression with her wonderful smile and easy going manner with the drivers. Sportsman of the Year Award of $200 JE Piston certificate went to Kevin Hoffman for his generosity to Brian Weaver in helping him win the championship by keeping him in the point battle.
Other awards given out went to Steve Feder for his first career feature win; Rex King, Jr. won the Scorpion Award, with Carl Murdick collecting the Red Horse Performance Award. Jeremiah Shingledecker picked up the Performance.com Awards and Mark Frankhouser received the Franklin Rearend Award. Mike Turner, Chris Haines and Dave Murdick received the Raceequip Awards and Brad Rapp picked up the Competition Products Award.
The 2013 racing season is fast approaching and there will be a couple of changes to the program. In 2013 any driver that has perfect attendance for the season will receive a minimum of $200 in addition to any point fund monies. Also, to be considered for the top 20 in the 2013 point standings and be eligible for 2013 point fund money a driver must attend at least 75% of the races.
The schedule is filling in nicely with our first 2013 event to be held at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on May 25th. The next race on the current schedule will be July 7th at Eriez Speedway with the Modified Tour then competing at Expo Speedway on Thursday, July 11th. July 19th will find the Modified Tour back at Wayne County Speedway after a few years absence and then the following night, July 20th will find the drivers traveling to West Virginia Motor Speedway for our second appearance at the track. The big block vs. small block showdown will be held at Mercer Raceway Park on August 17th and then on Tuesday, August 20th the Modified Tour will be at Sharon Speedway for the running of the Lou Blaney Memorial Race. The Modified Tour will then return to Sharon Speedway on September 13-14th for the running of the Applefest Nationals and the Russ King Memorial Race. Finishing out the schedule that is in place at the current time, the Modified Tour will be at Lernerville Speedway on October 25-26th for the running of the Steel City Stampede.
