They happened usually Wednesday evenings in 1970 and 1973. Ralph Quarterson was the winner of the series in 1970 and Jan Opperman was the winner in 1973. I believe Opp got the use of a Vega for a year as champion. Tha car came from Nick Chevrolet. You'll have to go and read about the 500 lappers that Earl Baltes had at Eldora in 1965, 1966 and 1967. Plus the Williams Grove National Open was 100 laps or 150 laps at times. Talk about tough. I(and others) remember Dick Bailey driving the bus from Grove City, racing in the race, and driving back to Grove City all in one day.100 lap Sprint car race ? never heard of one lol .. must have been a site!

Those bus rides were quite the trip. I miss those days.
And to take the story just a bit further, Dick would drive down to qualify on Saturday then drive home. The bus would pull out of Grove City at about 7 Sunday morning, get to the track about noon and Dick would hop back in the race car for the 150 lap race. About 1/2 hour after the checkers fell we were on the way back to Grove City.
The first year of the trip we made the run 3 weeks in a row before they got to race. Week 1 rain, week 2 snow, Week 3 bitter cold and windy.

Now the boys from Butler. I remember parts of that like it was yesterday. First week, my dad and I and two friends. Second week, my dad and I and one friend. Third week my friend and I decided to leave the driving to Dick Bailey. Since we lived in Butler, my friend picked me up at 4:30 and we went up to Grove City. We got to go in early because we were a bus load and got the top row. Not really the best seat in the house. Haven't been that COLD at a race since that day. Not sure but it seems the car broke and Dick raced just the first 75 laps that day. I remember waking up on the way back and it seemed Dick was the only person awake on the bus. I smiled to myself , thought how tough Bailey was, and went back to sleep.
