SAD DAYS IN CALIFORNIA

2 Killed in Sprint Car Crash at Marysville Raceway Park

MARYSVILLE, CA | Mar. 16, 2013 - Two people were killed after a sprint car lost control at the Marysville Raceway Park Saturday evening.

An announcer at the track, Steven Blakesley, told ABC News the car, driven by Chase Johnson, had apparent mechanical problems and did not make the corner at turn 1. The car hit the left wall and then crashed into the two victims.

Blakesley said one of the victims is the driver's 14-year-old cousin and a 68-year-old owner of a few cars in the race.

The Yuba County Sheriff's Department said the older man was pronounced dead at the scene; the teen was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff's department said no other people were injured.

The crash happened during hot laps, which started at 6 p.m. The race was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Crowds were at the park for the California Sprint Car Civil War Series. Events at the raceway have been cancelled after the crash.

The 30 teams who entered in the race have donated their combined entrance fee of around $10,000 to the families of the victims, Blakesley told ABC News.

On its Facebook page, the Marysville Raceway Park posted, "Our thoughts and deepest prayers go out to everyone. Out of respect we will not elaborate on details. We ask everyone to respect each other and the families."

Sad tragedy... With this accident and the recent mess at Daytona I look for the insurance companies that are insuring the short tracks across the Country to really put the pressure on the tracks to upgrade and strengthen their catch fences and or move seating further back from the track. There are some tracks in the area that the grandstands are too close to the track and some that their catch fences would have a hard time keeping a large animal from going through them let alone a 1000 to 3000+ pound race car.

Agreed. Especially with that second sentence.

Agreed 100% about some of these "catch" fences at some of these tracks...It is not only the tracks responsibility to ensure an adequate fence is installed, but it also falls under the common sense slot that some of us (me included by all means) fail to use...I know how much of a rush it is feeling and seeing 410 Sprints or Super-Lates screaming past you, but you just don't have the reaction time nor that area to escape to if one of those beasts come at you...

It is truly a tragedy when stuff like this happens. My thoughts go out to the families of those involved. I also agree with the posts above in regards to some tracks in my area.

Lernerville is a scary place if a sprint car flips. Ive been in turn 4 where huge chunks of mudd have flew over the fence and knocked this guy out of his seat this past year. Thank god he was about 300lbs to take the brunt of it, i can only image if that huge (about a 9x14in chunk) chunk would have hit a kid or smaller person.

There is always going to be that chance that something from a car comes into the stands, no matter how high and well built the fence is, or how far away the stands are from the track. Even at the Clearfield tracks, where the track sits well below the stands, there is still the possibility of something going that far in a high speed crash. It can happen anywhere, and as the cars continue to get lighter and faster the chances will continue to increase. The tracks I worry about are the ones that have the stands at track level, and use what basically amounts to farming fence.

The problem is, by posting that link and telling everyone to read it, you are giving that fag exactly what he wants. Ignore him and he'll go away. Just to show what a blowhard that dude is, he tweeted that the girl was at fault in the Stubenville rape story.

Saw a sprint car flip into the infield at Port Royal on opening night in 1978! It was off turn four and it landed on top of a pickup truck's cap..... backed up to the inside wall in the pits! Two guys were standing on the cap watching the race! One didn't survive! Ever since that time I have been paranoid watching sprint car races! Most Modern day built speedways like Dog Hollow and TVR in this area have the stands built on a hillside over looking the track! By far the best senerio! But the old time tracks like Motordrome or Jenerstown, or Latrobe have the stands right up against the front straightaway! Makes for very dangerous situation! Actually surprised people don't get injured moore often at these places! A bad situuation out there in California for sure! Just hope some promotors learn from this tragedy and put some better saftey measures in effect for fans at these speedways with close grandstands! As for the Pits.... all ways the most dangerous place you can be! Thats why they make you sign a release! Prayers extended to the families.

One track at a time. According to the appealdemocrat newspaper in Marysville, CA, Marysville Raceway Park exits directly into the pits after a straightaway and doesn't have a gate. We will watch and see what they do before next week. According to the National Speedway Directory from last year, there are 39 dirt and paved ovals in California. It would be interesting to see how many exit directly into the pits after a straightaway. Same source shows Pennsylvania with 52 dirt and paved ovals.

He wrote a blog about the Stubenville rape case blaming the girl and was promptly exposed as a statutory rapist by anonymous. You don't screw around with those dudes, they'll ruin your life.
