(Mercer, PA) April 6, 2013-Veteran Late Model driver Dave Scott from Garland, Pa “iced” the competition driving Billy Henry’s back up car leading flag to flag to garnish the first race of the 2013 Sweeney Chevrolet FASTRAK Late Model Northeast Touring Series over a stout 23 car field at Bill Altman’s Mercer Raceway Park on Saturday April 6 as part of the season opening “Chiller Thriller.”
Eventual winner Scott and Colton Flinner led the 24 car field to Donny Gallagher’s green flag with Scott taking the lead right from the start. Flinner challenged Scott out of turn 4 on the first lap getting sideways letting third place starter Wayne Robertson to slip into second. Scott increased his lead in the opening laps. Seventh place starter Dan Angelicchio passed Josh Double for sixth on lap 9. Scott began lapping the field on lap 9 while the caution flew on lap 10 for Jim Cochran that bunched up the field.
After going back to green fourth place starter Max Blair was challenged by Mike Pegher Jr for fifth. On lap thirteen Flinner regained second place over Robertson. Will Thomas then moved into sixth from starting twelfth on lap seventeen getting around Pegher. Scott continued to lap the field at the halfway point getting into Mike Anderson in corner four but maintained his lead.
Scott opened up his lead to a straightaway at lap 24 with a two car battle behind with Robertson and Angelicchio for the third place position. Angelicchio got around Robertson on lap 28 for third with the caution coming out on for Dustin Waters on lap 32 bunching up the field once again. With the lapped cars going to the rear on cautions this put Flinner right next to Scott on the restart.
Angelicchio was able to pass Flinner while Scott pulled away and held off the competition to win the $2,000 feature and to take home a beautiful 6 pound goblet trophy. “This is awesome” said the winning Scott, “starting on the pole can be tough but I can’t say enough about this team. I need to thank Billy (Henry) for letting me drive this car. This is meant to be a part time ride as I’m slowing down this year with my family and go karts but we may need to think about that. The last restart got me worried but after the good jump I got I knew we were ok. Look at the size of that thing (the trophy) that’s Awesome!!!”
Scott won his fifth career FASTRAK Northeast Touring show feature with Angelicchio second from seventh, Flinner third, Max Blair fourth and Mike Pegher Jr. fifth from eleventh. Both Pegher and Will Thomas were the hard chargers both moving up seven spots to better their position.
