FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hesston Opens 2013 on May 11 with Steel Block Bandits and Track Improvements

(Hesston, PA) The “Dirt Doctor” DR Eriksen has been busy at Hesston Speedway making even more facility improvements to greet fans and racers when the track opens for 2013 on Saturday, May 11. The “Night of Power” will showcase the Steel Block Bandits Semi-Late Model Sportsman with a $1,500 to win championship and bonus payoffs for all other classes.

After a very successful 2012 season, the “Dirt Doctor” continues to give back to the racing community with better payoffs and track improvements. The strong support of the race teams at Hesston with high car counts at all events is being rewarded. In 2013, all events will feature bonus payoffs for all classes.

In just three short years, Hesston has been transformed into one of the top facilities in the region with continuous improvements. For the 2013 season, higher walls have been installed on the outside of the front and back straights to increase safety. New clay has been added to the turns to guarantee the excellent surface that allows 3 and 4 wide racing on the high banks. The outside pit area staging lanes have been lengthened to allow for better traffic flow and for an improved “hot” pit area. The outside pit area will also be extended another 100 feet to the back, allowing for more pit parking. Finally, the “loop” has been completed around the track with an access road has been installed leading from the back straight view/camping area to the pit area.

The “Night of Power” on May 11 will be the first of three appearances of the Steel Block Bandits on the high banks of Hesston during the season. The 35 lap championship event for the Semi-Late Model Sportsman (limited/steel block/crate late models) will pay $1,500 to win and $160 to start. All divisions will compete for increased payoffs and race championship feature distances. Steel Block Bandits will return on Sunday, September 1 as well as for their 2013 finale at “The Ultimate” on October 11-12-13.

A-Cadets (street/pro-stocks) will race for $700 to win in a 25 lap feature. Hobby-Modifieds (pure/strictly stocks) will run 20 laps for $400 to win and Roadrunners (stock fwd 4-cylinders) will race 15 laps for $250 to win. In addition, the Penn-Mar Vintage Coupes will compete in a full racing program featuring these classic race cars in all-out racing action.

Semi-Late Model Sportsman competitors are reminded that the following weight limits will apply for all Hesston 2013 events, including those sanctioned by the Steel Block Bandits. The 2013 weight rules for Hesston are a compromise between the 2012 track weight limits and current Steel Block Bandits rules. The weight limits are the correct variances to equalize the various motor categories on the 4/10 mile at “motor mountain.”

Hesston/Williams Grove/Bedford/Hagerstown etc.-legal limited 358 motors will weight 2,350. Open 358 motors will weigh 2,400 with aluminum heads requiring a 50 lb. weight on or in front of the motor mid-plate. Open steel block motors up to 430 ci. will weigh 2,450 with no mid-plate requirement. The 2,450 weight is also an option for open 358 aluminum head motors without a mid-plate. GM 604 motors will have a 2,200 weight limit and GM 602 will weigh 2,100. GM crate motors will be permitted to run 12” spoilers. For Steel Block Bandits events, Ford crate motors will be permitted using SBB weight rules for 2,200 for D347SR and 2,100 for D347JR.

Steel Block Bandits tire rule will apply for all Hesston events with the exception of any compound permitted on the inside front tire. The other 3 tires must be AR 44 or harder, Hoosier 1300 or harder and durometer a minimum of 32 at any time.

A-Cadets and Hobby-Modifieds have unified, multi-weight category rules that allow virtually every car in the region to be legal and competitive at Hesston. Roadrunners have standard stock rules compatible with most area tracks. All drivers in all divisions are required to have RACEceiver one-way radios. Semi-Late Model Sportsman, A-Cadets and Hobby-Modifieds are required to have transponders for scoring. Track transponders may be rented for $15 for each event. Transponder mounting pouches can be purchased for $15 at the track. Hesston Speedway’s transponder system is compatible with both AMB (red) and Westhold (yellow) units.

On May 11, pit gates will open at 2:00 with grandstands opening at 3:30. Drivers meeting an pill draw cutoff will be at 4:45. The first session of racing will begin at 5:30 with Hobby-Modified, Roadrunner and Vintage Coupe heats plus warm-ups for the Steel Block Bandits Semi-Late Model Sportsman. After an hour break for full track prep, the second racing session will start approximately 7:30 with full racing programs for the Steel Block Bandits Semi-Late Model Sportsman and A-Cadets, plus features for all other classes.

Adult admission is $14 for May 11, with Juniors 10-16 half price at $7. Children 9 and under are free. All pit tickets are $30. Steel Block Bandits entry fee is $35.

The 2013 Hesston Speedway “all-championship” schedule features seven high-octane events from May until October The Speedmonster & 3 State Flyers Super Late Models will compete in 6 racing programs and Steel Block Bandits Semi-Late Model Sportsman will sanction 3 events with the track’s Semi-Late Model Sportsman on the racing program for all other events.

Speedmonster 3/State Flyers Super Late Models will race for $8,088 total to win in twin 35-lap features at “Mega-Blitz Mach 3” on Sunday May 26 with a June 16 rain date. “Revolution 2013” on Thursday, July 4 will pay $5,222 to win for 55 laps with a July 7 rain date. The “Eriksen Grand Prix” on Sunday, July 28 will pay $4,044 to win for 44 laps with a rain date of August 4. “Superthunder Road” on Sunday, September 1 will also pay $4,044 to win for 44 laps.

The season will conclude with a massive late model phenomenon at “The Ultimate” on October 11-12-13. This mega-event will showcase 5 late model-type features, 4 late model series and 3 late model divisions. Speedmonster/3 State Flyers Super Late Models will pay a total of $14,444 to win with Steel Block Bandits Semi-Late Model Sportsman paying $2,600 and RUSH Crate Late Models paying $2,500. A-Cadets, Hobby-Modifieds and Roadrunners will also compete in high-paying super championship events during the weekend.

In 2012, Hesston averaged 41 Super Late Models and 29 Semi-Lates for a total average of 70 late model cars at its Speedmonster events. Overall car count average was 144. Track management has spent endless hours formulating rules packages which allow virtually every car in the region to be legal and competitive using weight and spoiler breaks. Hesston continues to offer increased payoffs to reward the drivers for their strong support of the track.

For a place that only runs special races you would think they would get with the times in the street stock rules verse weight. These cars are adding 400+ lbs of lead to make 3000 and you want them at 3200 because they have one infraction it's getting unsafe where to put weight. Last year Sharon speedway went to 3000 and have fun boys at their open shows and there was no bitching after the race and no one ran away with it. The fast guys are going to be fast no matter what you do and the back markers will still be back there. I think you would get more cars cause there's a lot of guys that willnt add more weight. JMO and ten cent rant this morning

Their rules and weights look similar to Mercer's Little Guy rules. Mercer has 3,200 pounds for many of the same things.

Pretty much every street stock open show is 3200# and this is the first I've ever heard anyone complain.

The weather service currently shows the chance of rain decreasing to 20% at 4PM on Saturday. The track has been sealed off to better tolerate the rains. Plans are to RACE if this forecast holds true! The Dirt Dr also has the modified airboat to blow off excess moisture and run the track in quicker!
