Lincolnton, NC – Retired race car driver Richard “Dick” Trickle, 71, died today from an apparent self inflicted gun shot wound.
The incident occurred at 12:02 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Highway 150 East in Boger City.
The Lincoln County Communications Center received a call apparently from the victim that “there would be a dead body and it would be his “. Communications Center workers tried to place a return call to the number but did not get an answer.
The first emergency units arriving on the scene located the body lying near the victim’s pickup truck.
Trickle was a Lincoln County resident and had lived here since the early 1990’s

Back in the day Dick would show up at Sharon Speedway from time to time. Did he ever win at Sharon. I do not Remember

Read somewhere he was suffering from some kind of health problems they were unable to diagnose.

I loved when he beat Earnhardt Jr. at Darlington, Jr. showed some class afterward, said" I'm honored to share the same track with Trickle"
He kept an in dash lighter in his race car so he could catch a smoke under caution. lol

The dude smoked himself ... How is that terrible or a tragedy ?? He wanted to die and now he's dead ... So why on earth should I feel bad or morn his passing ?? He's happy now

I never chime in on this stuff but as far as I know Mr. Trickle was a good man. I am sorry for his family and all who loved him. Mr. Trickle gave 110% in any race he was in. I only ever seen him run in Person at Sharon Speedway way back.
He must have been in some kind of grate pain in his life. To take his own life. Having to deal with cancer on and off the last 8 years I know pain. I hope Mr. Trickle is with God and i pray God is with his Family in there time of need.
