Marion Center Speedway – May 18, 2013
Marion Center Speedway was back in action again Saturday night after taking a week off for inclement weather in its 47 TH Season under the continued ownership of the Potts family. The night was filled with racing that included the racers of tomorrow with Kid’s Bike Races.
Ken Schaltenbrand of Sarver won the Lias Tire Super Latemodel feature by leading most of the twenty-five laps. Starting on the pole Schaltenbrand relinquished the lead to Rod Phillips who was on the outside pole at the start of the race. After five laps of racing, Schaltenbrand moved back into the lead and stayed there for good. Schaltenbrand was chased down by Wally Fox of Cooperstown and Matt Gaston from Rochester Mills who started fifth and sixth respectively and finished with Gaston in second and Fox in third. Billy Eash of Johnstown went from eighth to fourth and Clate Copeman followed Eash moving from ninth to fifth at the checkers. Bryan Force made his debut at Marion Center this season with a sixth place finish and was followed by Jerry Redden, Dave Blazavich, Doug Glessner, and Chris Clark for the top ten. The rest of the 24 car field finished as follows: Denton Boyer, Brandon Wearing, Tom Shaffer, Bobby Watt, Shane McMeans, Joe Zulisky, Bill Burns, Bob Sheesley, Tyler Dietz, Mike Blose, and Rod Phillips. Chad Helman, Jim Boyer and Herman Bertolini did not finish the feature. In the Lias Tire Super Latemodel heat races the victors were Mike Blose, Shane McMeans and Clate Copeman.
The Force Inc. Steel Block Limited Latemodel feature was won by Gale Huey of Glen Campbell. Huey started on the pole and led every lap for the victory Saturday night at Marion Center Speedway. Huey’s main contender throughout the twenty lap feature was Scott Stein from Cherry Tree. Stein picked up the trail of Huey just after the start and was running in second place after taking just a few laps to move from eighth to second. Huey had a battle on his hands for the lead but held off Stein’s advances for the win. Stein took second and Cheyenne Reed from Punxsutawney came up from eleventh to finish third. Fourth place went to Sam Gindlesperger of Johnstown with Gabe Shaffer of Punxsutawney in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Eric Baun, Joe Petyak, Frank Brocious, Jeff Weakland and John Poling. The Force Inc. Steel Block Limited Latemodel heat races went to Dave Buchanan and Joe Petyak.
Andrew Satterlee of Rochester Mills pulls off another victory in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodel division making him two for two so far this season. Satterlee started eighth in the twelve car field and meticulously moved through the pack to the front. By the end of the race Satterlee was leading with three laps to go and Joe Martin from Ringgold on his tail after having passed Martin for the lead. Satterlee kept Martin at bay and also another former leader, Joe Moyer from Ashville. At the checkers it was Satterlee with the win, Martin in second and Moyer in third. Mike Laughard of Twin Rocks was fourth and Jeremy Adamik of Leechburg was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Greg Beach, Patrick Waugh’s car driven by Gary Stahl, Mike Hite, Josh Jacoby and Chase Carnahan. Josh Valenti and Andrew Wylie complete the field. The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodel heat races were won by Josh Jacoby and Andrew Satterlee.
Nate Smith of Glen Campbell took the first four laps of the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock feature to move from eleventh place into the lead making him a back to back victor as well. After taking the lead from Jim Handyside who started on the pole, Smith enjoyed his ride at the front of the pack with some concern at the end about traffic impeding his speed and allowing Jeff Sweeney from Marion Center to catch up to him. Sweeney had been running second with good distance to go to catch leader Nate Smith, but finally was able to put pressure on Smith near the end. But Smith kept his cool and took the win for the second week in a row, with Sweeney in second and Dennis Bothell of Creekside in third. Fourth place went to Joe Kelly of Mount Pleasant and fifth was taken by Chris Schneider of Springdale . Taking up the rest of the top ten spots in order were A J Flick, Jim Handyside, Ray Hickok, Jr., Andy Burns and Brett Bingaman. Nate Smith and Dennis Bothell were the winners of the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock heat races.
Plagued with problems that caused multiple cautions that ended up with a feature cut short by time restraints placed on the races by track officials, the Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stocks’ winner was Bryant Small of Cherry Tree. Small started deep in the eighteen car field in twelfth place and was able to successfully make his way to the front a lap at a time with each restart from cautions. Getting a good grip on the track, Small gained places each time the green flag flew until he was the leader when the race timed out with only half the feature completed. Bill Finley from Jeannette had started on the pole and finished second to small and ahead of Jon Lee from Mahaffey. Fourth place went to Chris Hickok of Commodore and Nick Fulmer of Marion Center was fifth. Also in the top ten were Josh Bertolini, Mark Wetzel, Jr., Dillon Smith, Scott Ward, and David Beahr. The Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stock heat races were won by Jon Lee and Bryant Small.
Darin Gallagher of Butler was the big winner for the Mod-Lites Saturday night at Marion Center Speedway. Gallagher won his heat race and made a repeat performance in the feature. It was the first time Gallagher had run at the track and worked it well. He followed the lead of Brian Kaszubski of Apollo who started on the pole and led the entire race until on the final lap he spun in turn three with less than half a lap to go to victory. The race was backed up to a green- white –checker finish but the two laps weren’t enough for Kaszubski to get the lead back and Gallagher was able to hold off Tom Kline from Apollo for the win. Kline took second, Mike Flockerzi of Venus was third, Kaszubski took fourth, Doug Johnston of Harmerville was fifth with Jason Johnston of Freeport in sixth.
Marion Center Speedway would like to salute all our Kid’s Bike Racers and congratulate them on their first race this season. Please note the next bike races will be held June 15, but keep checking our website to make sure changes haven’t occurred. The Spectator Drags were scheduled to run Saturday night, but were postponed until a later date. We will try to give as much notice as possible for the rescheduled date so please keep on eye on the website for that info as well. The “Fastrak” folks have announced that Marion Center Speedway will be part of a triple crown weekend of Fastrak racing on July 27. Our Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodels will be joined on that date by other drivers in the sanctioned feature paying $2000 to win. Two other tracks will make up the other points of the crown on Friday and Sunday as the sanctioned Fastrak Crate Latemodels visit the area this summer.
