A friend and I are thinking about starting racing. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of pure stock would be the best to be competitive.

where are you from? the econo mod would be your best bet, as pure stocks are getting harder to find, and a competitive one is gonna cost as much as a decent crate lm. good used e-mods are everywhere.

metric chassis GM's are what 95% of all pure stocks are in our area.

An e-mod? I would avoid them due to the fact that they wreck continuously. The expenses would build up quickly in that division.

However, I do disagree with a stock car costing similar to a crate late model. Depending on how much WORK you put into the stock car, you can get one relatively cheap. A lot can be built through hard work and effort which will reduce costs. They do not have the suspension that late models do and, yet again, in my opinion, they wreck less than the late models do. All of that contributes to the cost but of course you understand that.

I know many people that have been able to enter the stock car division by buying cars cheap. Typically in the 5000-8000 range. And if you were to build one, the cost could possibly be less than 5000 depending on your resources, etc...

Probably be a good idea to go around to the different tracks and ask the stock drivers. Joe Kelley would probably be good to ask. From what I know, he has been around the division for a long time and is most likely very knowledgeable on this topic

If your looking for a stock car, the metric chassis with the 108" wheel base is the most popular in this area. If you were to build a pure stock/street stock you may want to just look into finding a good solid car that is already built. By the time you find a solid frame or car, prep it for the cage, weld the cage, install jack bolts, prep the suspension for racing, and other misc. fabrication work you are going to be looking at a few thousand dollars easy. There is a race ready street stock on the classifieds page for $4500 turn key. If you are looking for entry into the sport, $4500 is not a bad invenstment. Then you atleast have something to build from there by either upgrading the suspension or drivetrain as you progress into your racing career.

I would recommend looking at the semi-late division at AMP; it is very affordable and you are racing for 500.00 to win potentially and 100.00 to start. The class is slowly growing and at this time you would be racing with only 5 or 6 cars. jmo The other advantage is you are getting laps in a chassis car if your ultimate goal is to race in a late model division some day. Also this opinion is if you are in a reasonable tow distance to the track. I would start there first; what is close and what divisions do they offer.

I would start by asking you where you would be racing? Different tracks have different rules and knowing where you would be planning on racing is the best way to determine what kind of car you should get.

I was just told about a car that all it needs is a motor. He is asking 3500. It has everything else.

Crate late is the way to go cause you can run them about anywhere they have a steel block rule.

5 or 6 cars and the division is slowly growing?? $500 to win and 6 cars wont last long for the speedway. That's pretty risky trying to get a car together for that specific speedway hoping the division stays around for another year or 2 to gain experience. No way will a smart track keep a division like that going with a consistent count of only 5 or 6.

But if the pay is decent, why aren't the cars showing up? Lack of those kinds of cars in the area or what?

You should provide the members with a little more info. Where are you located? What track(s) do you intend to race? What kind of money do have to start with? What are your intentions moving forward? Many teams stay in the support classes their entire career, and that's fine. If that's your intention, then it's easier to map out a plan.

One suggestion I have if you havn't tried it already is to run an Enduro or two. You might find that you are bit by the bug or that it maybe isn't for you, and you can find all that out without spending a ton of cash.

Another thing to consider is that if you are serious about competing, and I mean improving weekly rather than walking around the pits with a drivers uniform on just to be seen, then that race car will become your life. Not to mention the financial drain. So, if you have any interests during the warm weather months other than racing, you will no longer have the time for it/them. A wise man once said there are race car drivers, and there are guys that drive race cars. Think about it.

Hi Rusty,
There have been 6 different cars in this class, start a race at the track; I just sold one which will be there in the next 2 or 3 weeks, I know of another that is done and for sale or the owner may possibly bring it out when his other obligations are less demanding. I know of another car that will be there in two weeks; the person just bought an engine off of one of our crew members, and I have had 8 inquiries through PM's on this site asking questions, one of which I am going to answer as soon as I send this reply. I feel very comfortable that the class will have 12 cars by the end of July and another one or two by seasons end. The owner has committed to this class for three years at his intial rules meeting and he has a set of rules that truly make this an affordable class to race. This class was established by AMP this year and no other track has this set of rules; the cars will be legal at other venues but are more restricted than the other venues in an effort to keep it affordable.

my opinion, race the class you feel the most comfortable with at first. get some seat time. pure stock is a great intro to rear wheel drive cars. GM metric chassis is the way to go there. but like others have said, chassis' are getting harder and harder to find.

[/quote] There is a race ready street stock on the classifieds page for $4500 turn key. Not any more  But I agree with you! Stocks are the cheapest form of racing above the 4 cylinders . Tim Shaffer told me once its a Good idea to start in the novice class to find out if you Really want to sacrifice the time and money to be a Racer .. There is Allot of Both ! Kurt Haberdel ( sorry if i spelled it wrong kurt ! ) told me most people dont stick it out for the long haul in racing .. They try it .. realize how dam hard it is and go back to the stands.

Alright guys. I truely do wish you the best of luck. As a fan, i never hate to see divisions shut down and people stuck with cars. I hope everything goes like according to plan and nothing like the RUSH show at sportsman speedway. Good luck to you guys

the semi- late class at A.M.P. is going to be good class and a 602 crate motor is legal there and they have a shock package to keep it reasonable in racing cost i think this class is going to grow real soon. i want them to bring back the wedge style bodies .
