Marion Center Speedway – June 22, 2013
Marion Center Speedway contestants raced to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle Saturday night to become the Mid-Season Champion of their divisions. In addition to the six divisions racing for the mid-season championships, the Marion Center Speedway Kid’s Club announced their fan of the Week is Katelin Komlosky. Katelin got a ride around the racetrack in a firetruck, and a chance to meet her favorite driver. Kid’s Club members also had their own door prizes Saturday night and collected tickets to win a bike near the end of the season
The Lias Tire Super Latemodel division crowned Mike Blose from New Bethlehem as its Mid-Season Champion. Blose started seventh in a twenty-two car field and moved into the lead for the fifth lap of the twenty-five lap feature; taking the lead away from Shawn Claar of Imler. Claar started on the outside pole and took the lead at the drop of the first green flag. Cautions kept the pack of Lias Tire Super Latemodels close together and that kept the pressure on Blose throughout the race. Claar stayed with Blose throughout the feature and although lapped cars ended the race between them, Claar finished second. Clate Copeman from Greensburg also ran up front in the feature and finished third for his efforts. George Lee of Loudonville , OH came in fourth and Rod Phillips from Punxsutawney moved up from fourteenth at the start to take fifth. Doug Glessner who started on the pole finished sixth and then came Ken Schaltenbrand, Matt Gaston, Jerry Redden, and Dave Blazavich for the top ten. Rounding out the field for the Lias Tire Super Latemodels were Wally Fox, Billy Eash, Bryan Force, Bobby Watt, John Myers, Joe Zulisky, Tom Shaffer, Bill Burns, Denton Boyer, Dane Laraway, Jim Boyer and Tony Burke. The Lias Tire Super Latemodel heat races were won by Doug Glessner, Shawn Claar and Clate Copeman.
Bernie Whiteford from Hastings became the Mid-Season Champion and only repeat victor of the Force Inc. Steel Block Limited Latemodel division. Whiteford made it into the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle by leading almost every lap in the twenty lap race. Joe Petyak of Gallitzin took the lead at the start and held the position for two laps before Whiteford retook the lead since he was the pole sitter. Whiteford and Petyak battled throughout the feature for the lead but Whiteford held off Petyak and also Cheyenne Reed who came up from fifth place to put the pressure on Whiteford at the closing laps of the Mid-Season Championship feature. Whiteford comes up with the win, Cheyenne Reed from Punxsutawney was second and Eric Baun squeezed in between Reed and Petyak for third leaving Petyak in fourth. Gabe Shaffer of Punxsutawney was fifth and Scott Stein finished sixth. Rounding out the top ten Force Inc. Steel Block Limited Latemodels were Jason Fosnaught, Travis Cottle, Tom Jobe and Gale Huey. The preliminary heat races were won by Jeff Weakland and Gabe Shaffer.
Butch Moyer from Ashville added his name to the short list of feature winners of the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodels to claim the Mid-Season Championship. Moyer gained entrance to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle by leading every one of the twenty laps-he started in first place and ended in first place. Andrew Satterlee and Mike Laughard were the only two previous winners in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodels. Satterlee left the track early before the half-way mark and Laughard did the same. The race unfolded with Jeremy Shaffer of Derry chasing Butch Moyer around the track and finishing in second place with Joe Valenti and Josh Valenti of Clymer close behind in third and fourth respectively. Joel Prosser of New Martinsville, WV made his Marion Center Speedway debut this season by taking fifth place. Scott Sallack finished sixth and then came Mike Hite, Paul Dominick, Ron Smithley and Joe Moyer for the top ten. At the conclusion of the Mid-Season Championship feature, the cars were given a surprise “tech check.” The post race inspection found no problems affecting the outcome of the race. The Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodel heat races were won by Ron Smithley and Joel Prosser.
Nate Smith of Glen Campbell does it again and again in the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock feature making Saturday night his sixth trip to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s circle out seven races this season to claim the Mid-Season Championship. The only other driver to win a W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock feature this year, Chris Schneider of Springdale , started on the outside pole and was enjoying his ride at the front of the pack, leading every lap along the way. But right beside him was Nate Smith of Glen Campbell waiting for the right opportunity to make a clean pass on Schneider. Finally after completing fourteen laps in second place, Smith made his move and swept away Schneider’s hopes of the Mid-Season Championship. A caution on the nineteenth lap caused the two contenders to be lined nose to tail for a green/white/checker finish. The sprint for the remaining two laps kept Smith in the lead to claim the top spot once again. Schneider took second and Ray Hickok, Jr. of Commodore was third. Fourth place went to Tim White of Punxsutawney and Jeff Sweeney from Marion Center was fifth. Rounding out the top ten W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks were Dennis Bothell, A J Flick, Brett Bingaman, Andy Burns and Gary Furman, Jr. Nate Smith and Jeff Sweeney won the heats.
The Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stock Mid-Season Champion is Luke Barnett from Mahaffey. Barnett claimed his title by holding off Andrew Koenig of Ruffsdale and Chris Hickok of Commodore throughout the race. Jim Hamilton of Coalport started on the pole but lost the lead to challenging Bill Finlay of Jeannette. Finlay was then replaced at the front by Barnett before the half-way mark. Barnett then kept his lead to the checkers. Chris Hickok finished in second with Andrew Koenig close by in third. Finlay took fourth and Nick Fulmer of Marion Center came up from ninth to take fifth. Rounding out the top ten for the Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stocks were David Beahr, Brandon Wetzel, Mark Wetzel, Jr., Rich Waltman, Jr. and Kylie Hamilton. The heat races were won by Kylie Hamilton, Chris Hickok and Luke Barnett.
George Hobaugh of Carn City nearly missed out on his weekly trip to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle for the Best Kawasaki Micro-Sprint Mid-Season Championship. Lap after lap was being led by R J Robertson from Delmont throughout the fifteen lap feature. Robertson had started fifth, two rows ahead of Hobaugh. Robertson seemed to have no problem maintaining his lead until the very end of the race. Robertson led lap fourteen and only had the final trip around the track to go for the win when his car lost all power and the finish line slowly faded from his grasp as George Hobaugh who had been making his way to the front from ninth place buzzed by Robertson to take the Mid-Season Championship victory. Hobaugh remains the only winner of the division. David Hawkins of Lower Burrell who has finished second before to Hobaugh once again took second place and Robert Garvey, Jr. from Grassflat was third. Lee Lehnerd from Cabot took fourth and Tim White from Lower Burrell was fifth. The rest of the eleven car field finished in the order of Brian Forester, Johnny Walker, Robertson, Cody Lehnerd, Allen Foster and Jason Hamacek. The Best Kawasaki Micro-Sprint heat race was also won by George Hobaugh.
