Marion Center Speedway – July 20, 2013
Marion Center Speedway was back in action-racing action-Saturday night with the Q-102/Fan Appreciation Night. During the intermission break, drivers brought their cars onto the track and fans were allowed down on the track to meet with the drivers, collect autographs and look at the cars up close. One car in particular got a lot of attention and that was the Jim Sebring 222-one of the original cars that first raced at Marion Center Speedway when it opened 47 years ago.
The Lias Tire Super Latemodel feature was dominated by Mike Blose from New Bethlehem. It was like a blast from the past as Blose took control of the race from start to finish. Blose started on the pole beside Jerry Redden from Mahaffey. After a rough start that ended up with Redden spun out, Blose’s car was the only 5 left on the track. Clate Copeman from Greensburg started right behind Blose and stayed there the entire race. Copeman was ready and trying to take the lead but the flawless driving of Blose left no room for Copeman to capitalize on. Copeman finished second and Dane Laraway from Harrison City who also had a front of the pack start finished third. Andrew Gordon of DuBois moved up from twelfth to fourth and Rod Phillips from Punxsutawney went from tenth to fifth. Doug Glessner, Sammy Stile, Jim Boyer, Herman Bertolini and Tom Shaffer made up the top ten and the rest of the field finished in the order of Bobby Watt, Redden, Dan Lee, Dave Blazavich, Chad Helman, John Myers, Ryan Christoff, Joe Zulisky, Bill Burns and Billy Eash. The Lias Tire Super Latemodel heat races were won by Jerry Redden and Clate Copeman.
Joe Petyak of Gallitzin made it into the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle for the first time with his victory in the Force, Inc. Steel Block Limited Latemodel division. Petyak went flag to flag in the front spot holding off Cheyenne Reed to get the win. Reed from Punxsutawney started fourth and challenged pole sitter Petyak for the lead from the start. Petyak maintained the lead throughout the race but Reed made a little error near the end of the twenty lap feature that gave Scott Stein the break he needed to take over second place. Stein from Cherry Tree had been following the pair closely and only needed that split second of a chance to make a pass on Reed to take second place away from him at two laps to go. Cheyenne Reed took third place and Eric Baun from Rossiter moved up from thirteenth place to take fourth. Dave Buchanan of Cherry Tree was fifth and Gabe Shaffer finished sixth ahead of Gale Huey, Jeff Weakland, Greg Beach, and Jason Fosnaught for the top ten. In the heat races, Dave Buchanan and Jeff Weakland were the winners.
In another feature, another division, a new victor emerged by dominating the track. This time it was the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodels that was taken over by Jason Carnahan from Indiana . Jason is the father of 10 year old rookie driver, Chase Carnahan who took the night off. But Jason Carnahan was the one who took off. From starting on the outside pole to the checkered flag, Carnahan led the entire twenty laps to make his way to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle. Carnahan was hounded the entire race by pole sitter, Andrew Satterlee who has been dominating the division this season. Satterlee from Rochester Mills moved in behind Carnahan and seemed to be waiting for the opportunity to take the lead that Carnahan never gave him. Carnahan “shut the door” on any slight chance of Satterlee or anyone else getting around him. Following Carnahan across the finish line in order were Satterlee, and then Mike Laughard from Twin Rocks, Joey Valenti from Clymer and Joe Moyer from Ashville. Sixth place went to Butch Moyer and then Josh Valenti, Jeremy Adamik, Troy Shields and Wayne Robertson for the top ten. Carnahan also won his heat race for the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Fastrak Crate Latemodels’ division and Mike Laughard won the other heat race.
The W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock feature was once again won by Nate Smith from Glen Campbell. The nearly unstoppable Smith started on the pole and also led every lap to the finish line giving him seven out of eight possible victories so far this season. There was even a surprise inspection post race for the cars that found nothing illegal in the top finishers for the division. Ray Hickok, Jr. from Commodore followed Smith from start to finish for second place and Jeff Sweeney of Marion Center was third. Fourth place went to Tim Bish from Ringgold and Tim White of Punxsutawney was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Rich Waltman, Brett Bingaman, Dennis Bothell, Rob Wilkins and Andy Burns. Nate Smith and Tim Bish won the heats for the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks.
Chris Hickok from Commodore had a nearly perfect run in the Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stock feature. With only one minor stumble that relinquished the lead, Hickok took the entire race in the front position. At the halfway mark, Bryant Small from Cherry Tree was able to pass Hickok for the lead, but it was short lived as Small spun out a few laps later putting Hickok back in front again. Hickok took it the rest of the way to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle. Nick Fulmer from Marion Center was second and Bill Finlay from Jeannette was third. Fourth place went to Jim Hamilton from Coalport and Ryan Claycomb from Altoona took fifth. Rounding out the top ten in order were Rich Waltman, Jr., Jason Bender, Bryant Small, Kylie Hamilton and Ryan Caldwell. The Willow Farm Campground Strictly Stock heat races were won by Chris Hickok and Nick Fulmer.
The Best Kawasaki Micro-Sprint feature went to Sean McAndrew from Apollo. McAndrew started fourth and worked his way into the lead by capitalizing on a restart near the end of the feature. A caution brought the field back together and McAndrew who had been running second to the leader from the start, David Hawkins of Lower Burrell , got a good restart and took the lead when the green flag was thrown. Holding the lead for the remaining four laps, McAndrew made it to the Integra Racing Shocks Winner’s Circle. David Hawkins finished in a close second place and Jeff Haefke from Austintown , OH was third. Fourth place went to R J Robertson of Delmont and Lee Lehnerd from Cabot was fifth. Then came Robert Garvey, Jr., Allen Foster, Jason Hamacek, Cody Lehnerd and Jim Horwat for the top ten. Sean McAndrew also won his heat race and R J Robertson won the other heat.
