31st Annual Sunoco North/South 100 Presented by Lucas Oil at Florence Speedway August 8-10 WAYCROSS, GA (August 5, 2013) – One of the dirt late model racings’ premier crown jewel events the Sunoco 31st Annual North/South 100 Presented by Lucas Oil is set for August 8th-10th at Florence Speedway in Union, KY. Activity will get underway on Thursday Night, August 8th with an open practice session. On Friday Night, August 9th will be RED BUCK Time Trials for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. On Saturday Night, August 10th will be Heat Races, B-Mains, and the North/South 100 paying $50,000 to win and $2,500 to start. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series comes to Florence with a very competitive battle for the point’s championship. The 2-time and reigning series champion, Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN heads to Florence with a mere 20-point lead over Ashland, KY’s, Steve Francis. Owens is a 3-time winner of the North/South 100. Francis is still seeking his first win in the prestiguos event which is the largest paying dirt race in his home-state. John Blankenship of Williamson, WV, is third in the series standings followed by defending North/South 100 winner, Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN, and 4-time series champion, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL. Florence Speedway is also enjoying a tight points battle in its’ Late Model Division. In fact Nick Latham of Winchester, OH and Tim Prince of Heltonville, IN are tied for the points lead heading into the North/South 100. Those two competitors are ahead of 6-time track champion, Steve Landrum of Erlanger, KY, Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN, and defending track champ, Robby Hensley of Walton, KY. Florence has been able to complete thirteen events this season with ten different winners. Johnson leads the way with three victories at the half-mile track with fellow Hoosier driver, Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN the only other driver with more than one victory as he has been to Florence victory lane twice in 2013. Other feature winners this year at Florence include; Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN, Duane Chamberlain of Richmond, IN, Kent Robinson of Bloomington, IN, Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, IN, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, and Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, KY. Prince and Hensley have won the last two Late Model races at Florence as the track takes this upcoming weekend off in preparation for the North/South 100 next weekend. With the upcoming 31st Annual Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 Presented by Lucas Oil on the horizon, anticipation is running high as one driver will walk away with $50,000. In the previous 30 North/South 100 events, 19 drivers have been able to hoist the trophy at the end of the night. LOLMDS competitor Jimmy Owens and the late Hall of Fame driver, Jack Boggs of Grayson, KY are the only two drivers who have etched their names in the record books as three-time winners of the race. There have been six drivers win the North/South 100 twice. Longtime Florence Speedway runner, Pat Patrick of Saylor Park, OH won the first two North/South races. Other driver with multiple wins include; Jeff Purvis of Clarksville, TN, Scott Bloomquist, John Gill of Mitchell, IN, Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH, and Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV. Also on Saturday, August 10th starting at 6 PM will be the 13th Annual National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. Those being inducted this year include: John Gill (Indiana), Darrell Dake (iowa), Eddie Carrier Sr. (Kentucky), Bill Frye (Arkansas), and Willy Kraft (Minnesota). Contributors being inducted include: Bret Emrick, Joe Garrison, and Jack Starrette. Indiana’s Don O’Neal will receive the Sportsmanship Award from the Hall of Fame.
