This info has not been shared often and Red never shared it in the racing community that I am aware of. It's what motivates me to try to be the best person I can be. It's not about racing, it's about who Red Miley really was...far more than a race car owner & promoter. He started with loving parents and family, parlayed that into personal success and shared it with the world. It's time this gets shared with the racing community, especially the youth who never knew Red. TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, May 6, 2007 "Red" Miley spent most of his adult life juggling the responsibilities of running several businesses, serving in municipal government, raising three adopted children and hosting a stream of exchange students. "He was involved with so many things that we could not keep track of him," said Miley's brother, Matt Miley. James. J. "Red" Miley died Thursday at his Ingram home after an 18-month struggle with melanoma. He was 53. Mr. Miley, a former Ingram councilman, was the owner of the Pennsylvania Motor Speedway near Imperial and the Motordrome Speedway in Smithton. Over the years, he owned several gas stations, a truck rental company and Miley Motor Sports, a company he formed with other family members. "He was a tremendous guy. I've had customers cry on the line all day," Matt Miley said Saturday. Mr. Miley's relatives and friends said his success in business was based largely on personal friendships. "He did well because he got along with everyone and because everyone liked him," Matt Miley said. A large and extroverted man, Mr Miley was the third of five children the family of the late William E. and Bertha M. "Sis" Miley of Ingram. While still a student at Slippery Rock University, Mr. Miley opened an Amoco station in Robinson. In 1975, the year after he graduated with a degree in education, Mr. Miley opened Miley Auto Service in Carnegie, and in 1989, he started Miley Truck Rental in Carnegie. Matt Miley said his education was paid for through his brother's business acumen. "He put me in business my sophomore year. He got me a gas station eight miles from where I went to school in Slippery Rock, and that paid for college and my master's degree" in business, Matt Miley said. A longtime member of the Carnegie Rotary Club, Mr. Miley was a participant in many of the club's activities. "He did everything for the Rotary, dressed up as Santa Claus every year, " said Rick Hess of Moon, the owner of an insurance company. "He always played Santa for our Rotary. He loved to sing, even though his voice was not that great." Mr. Miley met his wife, Ruth Halbedl, at a Pennsylvania Motor Speedway banquet. He proposed to her on Mt. Washington. The Mileys would have celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary this year. It was through the Rotary that the Mileys became hosts to 12 foreign exchange students over the years. "He was a very kind person and really liked having the students around," said his brother Ben. "He was also a history buff, and I think he enjoyed learning about their culture while they learned about ours." At the time of his death, Mr. Miley's family was hosting a foreign exchange student. Mr. Miley and his wife, Ruth, were the adoptive parents of three girls from China. "He saved three kids' lives, as far as I'm concerned," his brother Matt said. Mr. Miley is survived by his wife, Ruth Miley; three children, Jade, Lydia, and Kate; his mother, Bertha Miley, of Ingram; a sister, Twyla Miley, of Kennedy; and three brothers, Ben Miley, of Peters, Matt Miley, of Kennedy, and Jerry Miley, of South Park. He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Miley.

The first Red Miley machine that made it to the track. Started as a figure 8 car at Clinton. Only a few weeks of that, then onto 'late model" at North Hills Raceway. 1969 was the year, 1960 Chevy.

Early 1970 towing in style, Dad's 1964 Family wagon hauls the 99 to Clinton and Heidelburg. The team picks up their first win on a Sunday afternoon at Clinton...both Bucky & John Johnson were in the field! The Pink Panther with owner Red Miley, Crew Chief Jerry Miley, & Driver Ben Miley had broken the ice. The team followed up the Clinton win with a win the following Sat at Heidelburg. Bill Burns, a regular competitor described it like this when the young team rolled in...We said wow when we saw the car, wow we, after we saw it run! Red's team had their first 2 wins and the game was on...the team would post several wins and championships over the next 4 decades with owner, Red Miley and the Miley Family Racing Pink Panther. The car was pink as an honor to Herb Scott, childhood hero of the Miley siblings.

The 1980 MRE Camaro captured what would be the first of many PPMS victories for Miley Family Racing.
Posted Image

Neat looking 1983 MRE car that would end up a wedge car about mid season.
Posted Image

The 1984 C J Rayburn race car produced the most wins in a single season for Miley Family Racing, still quietly owned by Red Miley! 17 wins, 2 track titles & a second, & the Sizzler Champ. 1984 signaled the end of the wedge car era. The car ran as a wedge all season, then converted for Pennsboro in this pic.

The car with the most wins over 2 seasons for Miley Family Racing, a Bullitt 4 bar car. This car won 4 consecutive SLM features at PPMS in 1987 (Pre Miley Motor Sports in 1989), a record that still stands today.

Proud to say my Dad painted that 1983 car and is the sponsor on the nose for the 1984 car! I have the 1984 championship plaque down the shop still actually!

Yes, concussions and memory loss are hilarious...

If at first you don't succeed, then maybe you just suck.

No, junked cars and concussions aren't funny. What is funny is Austin was making fun of himself that now he has an excuse about his memory loss of misplacing his wallet and cell phone.
