By Jay Pees- Connors, Meyers, and Frantz Outrun Outlaws in the Forest Lamont, PA September 15, 2013: The first “Outlaws in the Forest” was held at Allegheny Mountain Raceway Sunday afternoon with victories going to Ed Connor, DuBois, PA, (Route 6 Racing Supply Street Stocks), Chris Meyers, Knox, PA, (Babcock Utilities Pure Stocks), and Josh Frantz, DuBois, PA, (Jay's Auto Repair and Fabrication Mini Stocks) after action-packed but close racing throughout the afternoon. Full fields in each class insured tight racing on the 1/4 mile bullring known as Allegheny Mountain Raceway, nestled in an open glen in Elk County, PA near the village of Lamont. Tom Boylan, a former Street Stock champion, promoted the special event at the track after the regular season had ended. Ed Connor led every lap enroute to the Street Stock feature win, while Chris Meyers came from his sixth starting position to the lead at lap thirteen to win the Pure Stock feature. Josh Frantz battled with Stateline Speedway champion Casey Burch before taking the lead, then driving to the win in the Mini Stock finale. The Route 6 Racing Supply Street Stocks got their feature underway after three heats and a Consolation Race qualified the eighteen fastest cars for the event then positions were drawn by the top qualifiers. Ed Connors, DuBois, PA, drew the pole position and proceeded to lead every lap. The scramble behind him was anything but easy as most competitors were involved in one or more incidents throughout the event. The first incident came early in the race when outside front row starter Gary Fisher spinning in front of the field. After restarting from the rear of the field, Fisher, who had towed all the way from Northeast, PA, worked his was back to the runner-up spot at lap thirteen but was unable to catch the leader to mount a serious challenge for the lead. Several more accidents occurred before the five lap mark was reached with many-time local champion Andy Michael, Allegany, NY, being the first car to exit the event after heavy damage in an early race pile-up. Bill Reeves, Celeron, NY, ran second over the first thirteen laps but slowed suddenly and headed to the pit at lap thirteen. Third place finisher Brandon Connor, DuBois, PA, ran near the front all afternoon, but didn't come to his eventual finish until the two lap signal was given. Fourth went to Kenny Lamp, who had towed all the way from Erie, PA and had had a miserable afternoon until the checkers flew. Lamp struggled through his heat and made the feature by winning the consolation event, then started sixteenth in the eighteen car field. Dennis Asel, of Kane, PA, ran third much of the ace but fell to his eventual fifth place finish with four laps remaining. Butters Trucking presented the winner with the trophy emblematic of the afternoon at the conclusion of the feature. Knox, PA's Chris Meyers started the Babcock Utilities Pure Stock feature from the sixth starting berth and stayed with early leaders Justin Queen and Colten Joiner through the early stages of the event, punctuated with several incidents and a disqualification for retaliating after a rough driving incident. Meyers came to the lead finally at lap thirteen with Joiner, of DuBois, PA, settling for second at the checkers. Third, after running in the top five throughout the race, was Mike Parmenter of Ellington, NY. Jamie Colewell, Knox, PA, was fourth after starting on the pole the slipping back in the early laps. Bolivar, NY's Joe Layfield, long a local favorite and former area champion, filled out the top five. Randolph, NY's Casey Burch started on the front row for the Jay's Auto Repair and Fabrication Mini Stock feature and immediately took off with the lead. The event ran caution free through much of the distance with eventual winner Josh Frantz challenging for the lead almost from the start, taking over at the front at lap thirteen. C J Irons, Bradford, PA, ran third at the finish after taking over the spot from Mitch Boylan, Mount Jewett, PA, at lap eighteen. Boylan finished fifth after Larry Mitchell, Smethport, PA, got by on lap nineteen.
