The guys at Western PA 305's need to get involved with the Laurel highlands 305 group. They had 24 cars Sunday at Bedford.

Bring out that Bedford car count to Sportsman heres your chance to support a real 305 class!

5.3's should not be in the same class as the 305's best move Knox could have made so far, only thing they could do better is adopt Race Saver 305 Sprint Rules, keep a totally level playing field for everyone and the fans will see the difference, the racers will see the difference and it will show. Could even join Laurel Highlands Sprint Car Series.

the race savers are allowed to run at sportsman speedway without being retected  by race saver. they just did not want to race at a disadvantage if they came to sportsmans. you lose 2 or 3 cars and may gain 4 or 5 cars.

despite what people say there is an advantage of a 5.3. the horsepower is 485hp for a 5.3 to 425hp of a 305. the camshaft is different you are allowed to have a .530 lift for 5.3 to .510 lift for a 305.

what mike showed at sportsmans once in the lead he led by about a half a lap, the rest of the field were 305s and 1 5.3 and they were all running in a pack

of 5 or 6 cars

Well I'm not sure how you guys went from saying the sprints were becoming your new main attraction the first race of the year to eliminating half the field... On the bright side the whole field will make the top 5 now

The spec tire is a new one from hoosier and im told it is a very hard compound.

A racesaver may be 425 hp but not a 305 that runs attica, freemont, or mercer. They are around 495 hp
Only advantage a racesaver would have is if track is slick. They would probably be even at freemont but not attica.

Mike Bauer is one of few drivers in the OSW class that turn consistent laps. Check his lap times during a 20 lap race at mercer and they vary by 2-4 tenths of a seconds usually. He goes to Knox and wins heat races and they do not invert putting him on the front row of the feature it's his race to lose, and chances are that isn't going to happen on that 1 lane race track. To point to his engine being the cause of that is just making an excuse because he's beating you. He has won quite a few races in the last year and a half in his 5.3 but he also has own races at mercer in a 305. So it wouldn't matter what kind of engine he has he is going to find his way to the front.

His worst finish of the year is 5th at mercer and I think he started 3rd. Race was won by driver from the pole 2nd and 3rd were both winning 410 drivers and 4th was someone that has been racing in the 305/limited sprint division for the last 7 years with multiple wins. All 4 were 305s. It isn't about the engine as much as it is about the setup and driver of the car. But I'm sure that was the race he decided not to cheat right? He has also been lucky along with being good that he has only been handicapped for his wins at mercer 2 times, because it wouldn't have been fair to make him start 12th during a race that paid $1000 to win. Yes he has finished 1st and 2nd in those races he was handicapped and had to start 11th and 12th. But no one points out the number of rookies in the class that are more focused on improving and not trying to win right away. 5 rookies are top 12 in points and 2 others only have half a season of racing experience in the division. Only 4 drivers in the top 12 have even won a 305 race at mercer.

Why would mercer ever consider dropping the 5.3s. They do not need to go race saver they have been getting 20+ cars this year the OSW is doing fine without he racesaver. Of course when they decide to hold higher paying races those racesaver guys that have the issue with the 5.3 motors still decide to come race. Hopefully mercer will look a that and decide to not let someone that doesn't support their division weekly or isn't top 20 in points try to come in and win those races.

Win count at mercer is 3 for 5.3s and 2 for 305s. More then likely just as the last 2-3 years it will be pretty even at the end of the year also.

Same thing happened at Knox years ago lead by Walt Tutak when Sharon's limited sprints were running there weekly and 8-10 cars were showing up. They wanted 305s to be able to run with them and had I believe 3 or 4 show up. I say show up because 2 of the 4 never ran and just would make a lap and pull off to get start money. Then the others complained about the pay out until Knox officials decided to just pay every car that showed up $100. So the Sharon cars stopped showing up because what would the point be to show up knowing you are losing $100 to tow there to race. But that's when guy griffin was the cheater not Mike Bauer

What brand of tires?

I think French will make the best deal for the series.

His best deal is $169 Hoosier+ tax.  The PASprintSeries 305's are used to getting used tires for $25 to $50.  Being able to purchase used tires or less expensive tires has been helping the 305's concept.  Having to purchase $175 tires is not beneficial to that concept.  Affordable racing.  $260 to win.  $175 for a right rear.  410 racing.  $1200-$3500 to win.  $250 for a right rear.  Enjoy the larger 305 fields while you can.

In the mid nineties at Hickory Speedway in New Castle, the 360's raced for $560 to win. Flat top pistons and no roller cam.  There was a right rear only MC 1,2,or 3(?) spec tire for $138+ tax.  Because of the surface, that was a right rear every Saturday night.  First paid $560, second paid $360, third paid $310 and fourth paid $250.  Of course the 360's were the top class at Hickory. They only raced 410's on occasion.  But that was eighteen years ago.  Now  some want  a $169+ tax spec tire and pay $350 (?) or less to win.  Like I said, enjoy the larger 305 fields while you can.  I enjoyed my good old days and now is your chance to enjoy yours.

How do you presume it is more costly to put a 410 on the racetrack?? With those new 305s costing b/w 10000-15000, I know damn well I could find an older reliable 410 motor for use around here in Western Pa. And it will make me a hell of a lot more money than any regular 305 race. Build up funds, and then buy better stuff. Besides the learning curve, the crates and 305's are useless IMO. "Cost" of a 410 is no excuse to spend a good chunk of cash on a 305 motor and skip a 410 opportunity. I believe the 410 is the much smarter route and we can even see some people doing it today

Now you guys have a tire rule for a beginners class that isn't supposed to be "costly". More of a reason to get the hell out

Less than 10 cars in the field at Bedford were from Laurel Highlands. The rest came from PAS out East.

You guys have a short memory. Walt Tutak was tossed from the now defunct Western Pa Racesaver Board of Directors by French Grimes and he is banned from Racesaver. His crime......trying to find more places for the Racesaver 305 sprints to race. He did not deserve the shafting he got from French Grimes and Racesaver.

Only a year ago you could not take a Racesaver 305 to a non Racesaver 305 race without going through the whole tech process, even if the seals remained intact, before you were allowed back in Racesaver. This year Racesaver has recorded the numbers from the seals and heads. Racesaver sprints can go where they want as long as the seals are unbroken and match the records. So French Grimes is is doing exactly what he tossed Walt Tutak out of Racesaver for.

To; Mike Bauer, I believe you stated that you would not be returning to Sportmans ,,,until,,,,,Please rethink that statement.   Your talent as a driver will be missed.  The OSW have good rules, Sportsman Speedway adopted those rules as well as Racesavior.  This should not discourage a driver from doing the best that they can, as you do.  Is there inequality ?, I think not. A good driver with a good setup will always be towards the front.

Sounds like the Frenchman took care of the biggest complaint against him.  And it doesn't matter if the 305's come from the Laurel Highlands Racesavers, the Virginia Racesavers, the Carolina Racesavers, the PASprintSeries or any other Racesaver group as long as they come. All with the same motor. The same motor.  Now doesn't that sound like fun.  Go ahead.  You're allowed to smile.

Way too many egos in this mix. The 305 division is the least economical division there is. It's good for gaining experience. THATS IT. People get your heads out of your asses. Buy a 8000-10000 410 motor and race for some money. And don Blackshear has a good reputation? Never heard that one before! If I was a racetrack I'd shit can the 5.3 just so I didn't have to listen to this bullshit. It's a GM pos truck engine who gives a shit. Sprint cars shouldn't need cooling fans or batteries.

You and Rusty Nuts are both correct. You can go 410 racing in W. Pa. on a budget and be competitive. It's understandable that someone with little or no racing experience might want to start in a 305. Fact is, it's still a Sprint, and someone could still get hurt. Stuff will still get tore up. The difference is you will race for more money in a 410. As a division, I have no trouble with the 305's, as long as we are seeing good young talent funneled into the 410's. But, this area being the way it is, I suspect what we will see is far too many career 305 drivers, or the big fish, small pond syndrome.

Honestly though, we ran a 5.3 this year because we were just starting out. Right now its being prepared to be pulled out of the car. Something happened to one of the rear injectors causing a fuel leak resulting in my son getting burnt. Even if I did run it again, I would never trust it.

As far as racesavers, french is now enforcing a tire rule effective july 1

I got burned by a fuel line problem in a 410..with a Hilborne injector.....Bob Felmlee got burned by a 410 with an Engler.....the ls motor is not the problem...

Wasn't there a time when Lernerville wouldn't allow Daugherty to run the Schwanke there because of the fuel pump?  Didn't they let him run one night and told him he couldn't return with that engine?
