Dog Hollow Announces Independence Day Top Dog 50 Paying $4000 to Win On July 4

STRONGSTOWN, PA (June 12, 2014) –Promoter Dan Savino has decided to announce on July 4 Dog Hollow Speedway will host the Independence Day Top Dog 50 for Super Late Models.  The 50-lap race  will be paying $4000 to win and $100 to start. It will also pay points out to the local drivers.
The night will also feature a concert by country recording artist Ricky Lee.  Lee will start at 6 PM and perform until about 7:15 then he will also do a small performance at intermission too.
“We had a great response to our Shawn McGarvey Memorial and with the Late Models off at many of the local tracks we wanted to do something special for the drivers and fans,” said Savino.  “Bedford Speedway is running Thursday night with the Three State Flyer Series and Lernerville is not running Super Late that night. Also Marion Center is running Thursday with a Late Model Special, and Saturday, so we thought we would give some of the drivers a chance to make some extra money and stay in the area. We wanted to get the word out so drivers and fans can plan now. Fans can bring out their campers and spend an entertaining weekend.”
This will give the drivers a chance to run three nights with extra money on the line each night. Crate Late Models, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and FWD 4 Cylinders will also be in action that night. Pit Gates Open 4:30, Grandstands 5:30, Racing 7:30.
Since taking over the reigns at the end of January, Salvino and crew have been making improvements to the speedway. New boards and painting have been done to the seating plus the addition of new food booths.  An improved menu at the concession stand has also been added and more will be coming as the season progresses.

Only 40 times what it pays to start to win.  Why not fifty or sixty times?

Not too bad??? Lets look at the numbers. Based on a 24 car starting field, total purse $12,000.00 $4000 for first 33%. Standard "rule of thumb" is 1st place is 25%. $10,000 paid out to the top 8 positions (83% of the purse), that leave less than 17% over the next 16 positions. This leaves at best possibly 4 cars a chance to make money! (I'm guessing the cost to put the car on the track from door to door with tires $700) I'm sure I'm low on that number, others could give a more accurate number.

$3000 to win 2. $1500, 3. $1250, 4. $1000, 5. $900, 6. $800, 7. $700, 8. $600, 9. $550, 10. $500, 11-20 $250, 21-24 $200 Total purse $14,100. 76.5% of the purse over the top 10, and 23.5% over the last 14 positions. This is a fairly standard purse structure.

Before everyone yells that it pays $3000 instead of $4000, and I added $2100 to the total purse. The object is to attract more cars, and getting the cars that feel they can make the show and have a good chance of making money. When you put 10 to 15 cars on the track that have a "real" shot at winning the race is the goal for the track to make money on an event like this. But when a driver knows when they miss the setup for the feature and go backwards a few spots, it's not going to cost them a lot.

It is very hard to compete for cars on holiday weekends, when several tracks offer specials. So you better have a solid purse to attract 30+ car count.  Just my thoughts.

Engine rebuilds are 8-10 dollars a lap at a serious engine builder. Late model plus fuel is like 600 for 54 gallons , Gibbs oil 15 per quart plus pit passes , hauler fuel , tires and any damage or wear items

You clearly take heavy losses to race but 150 for 10th at a 4k show isn't going to cut it

The owner must figure if he puts all the money on the top 5 places, all the fast cars in the world will show up and fight over the top 5 pay outs.

What I think is nobody's is going to show up and run their car for 50 laps, because it isn't worth making the tow if your not in the top 3.  They might as well only pay the top 3 and give everyone else $200 tow money.

DS2, glad you said that, I forgot to mention the fact that running 50 laps is too much for the advertised purse.

I thought payout didn't matter?  I would of went like $2500.00 to win. $1500.00, $1250.00, $1000.00 $750.00 $700.00, $650.00, $600.00, $550.00, $500.00 $450.00, $400.00, $350.00, $300.00, $250.00, 16-24  $200.00   $13,500.00 payout!  Only one car can win!  That payout would draw a nice field of cars!  $700.00 is what it costs to run a 25 lap show!  This race will cost you more like $1,000.00 to run!  4 cars have a chance to break even or make a buck!
