Not too bad??? Lets look at the numbers. Based on a 24 car starting field, total purse $12,000.00 $4000 for first 33%. Standard "rule of thumb" is 1st place is 25%. $10,000 paid out to the top 8 positions (83% of the purse), that leave less than 17% over the next 16 positions. This leaves at best possibly 4 cars a chance to make money! (I'm guessing the cost to put the car on the track from door to door with tires $700) I'm sure I'm low on that number, others could give a more accurate number.
$3000 to win 2. $1500, 3. $1250, 4. $1000, 5. $900, 6. $800, 7. $700, 8. $600, 9. $550, 10. $500, 11-20 $250, 21-24 $200 Total purse $14,100. 76.5% of the purse over the top 10, and 23.5% over the last 14 positions. This is a fairly standard purse structure.
Before everyone yells that it pays $3000 instead of $4000, and I added $2100 to the total purse. The object is to attract more cars, and getting the cars that feel they can make the show and have a good chance of making money. When you put 10 to 15 cars on the track that have a "real" shot at winning the race is the goal for the track to make money on an event like this. But when a driver knows when they miss the setup for the feature and go backwards a few spots, it's not going to cost them a lot.
It is very hard to compete for cars on holiday weekends, when several tracks offer specials. So you better have a solid purse to attract 30+ car count. Just my thoughts.

The owner must figure if he puts all the money on the top 5 places, all the fast cars in the world will show up and fight over the top 5 pay outs.
What I think is nobody's is going to show up and run their car for 50 laps, because it isn't worth making the tow if your not in the top 3. They might as well only pay the top 3 and give everyone else $200 tow money.

DS2, glad you said that, I forgot to mention the fact that running 50 laps is too much for the advertised purse.

You clearly take heavy losses to race but 150 for 10th at a 4k show isn't going to cut it
I thought payout didn't matter? I would of went like $2500.00 to win. $1500.00, $1250.00, $1000.00 $750.00 $700.00, $650.00, $600.00, $550.00, $500.00 $450.00, $400.00, $350.00, $300.00, $250.00, 16-24 $200.00 $13,500.00 payout! Only one car can win! That payout would draw a nice field of cars! $700.00 is what it costs to run a 25 lap show! This race will cost you more like $1,000.00 to run! 4 cars have a chance to break even or make a buck!
