I have been running Valvoline VR1 20w-50 for 10 years, and have never had the temp over 280 degrees. But this year my oil temps have been 300+ for 6 weeks in a row. Water temp is 200, and oil pressure is 30-40 hot idle.

Pulled the filter and cut the housing. No metal in the filter. Changed oil and it isn't burnt or have a burnt smell. Checked the gauge and it is reading right.

Anyone else experiencing high oil temps with VR1?

Take bulb out and don't look at it!

......how does one check the gauge? with a new one?

Heat water on stove, use candy thermometer to check temp against

Are you running a different gear than normal, several factors come into play with oil temp, if you are lugging the motor on a track that has alot of bite, this will increase oil temp, its not likely anything in your engine going wrong as far as oil temp, just think about what you might be doing different, hope this helps you,

Maybe running to much oil? Causes the oil to get churned up by the crank and gets aerated and increases oil temp.

Did that and both gauges I have were within a few degrees of the boiling point of water.

I've dropped down from a 620 to a 600, rpm off the corner is the same.

Same oil, additive, and amount as I have been running for the last 4 years, 1qt in the filter, 8qts and two bottles of STP in the pan.

I highly doubt your pan is supposed to hold 8 quarts plus 2 containers of STP .... Most big wet sump pans hold 8 quarts

did u do anything to the engine like new bearings if the clearances close up on the lwr end it will heat up the oil to 300 plus if u can 't find the norm then i would look there i use brad penn and oil and water temps run pretty close has ur water temmp also gone up any

There ya go you just answered your own question, you are putting more load on the engine,

I ran 620 first few races and oil temps were still over 300.

Besides that you cant drop 20 points in gear and still have the same low end rpm off the corner,.

I have the engine freshened at the end of each season, it is actually going back to my builder to check the bearings and clearances this week. But no my water temps have been 180-200 and oil pressure hasn't dropped below 30psi.

It was laboring off the corner last week because of a miss...

2 years ago I was running a 567 and oil temps rarely exceeded 280, last year I was on a 600 & 620 and again oil rarely exceeded 280. Now this year it has pegged the gauge twice already. Even in a heat race it will approach 280 in just a few laps.

It is an 8qt pan, but what im having a hard time figuring out is why after 3 previous seasons of running the same thing (amounts) is it all of a sudden pegging the gauge. Now i have a cooler to install, but that wont fix the problem, im sure ill see a reduction in temps though. I have a 10qt pan on another engine.

Well unless you put new parts in ir your clearances wouldnt have changed, so you do what you think is best, but sometimes the problems people have are so simple that they are overlooked, just trying to save you from pulling motor. Good luck

I appreciate that, but its already out and on a stand. I'd rather have the bearings and clearances checked first, that way I can eliminate that part of the equation...

all the replies have valid reasons for increased oil temp----but I have to go with the Legend on this one

you have too much oil in it

there should be a sight plug on the pan for oil level----it should never be coming out and IF you are using a cooler you MUST have the engine running to check the level

we have had customers install quality oil coolers and the temp go UP and it was because the level was too high

Brad
