I'm not sure I'm remembering this right or not, but from the way the car broke maybe it's a reason.
It was explained to me once to save weight, instead of notching the cage tube going down to the bottom rail and welding it to a solid bottom rail, some notch both the down tube and the bottom rail and then weld. Other tube joints are done the same to save weight.
For the car to break where the down tube from the cage meets the bottom rail, something has to weaken the bottom rail. It could be welding causing the break at that point or it could be both tubes were notched to save weight and then welded. Sure the engine and motor plate are heavy and the likely reason for them to break off together, I'm thinking in addition to weight there may be another reason for the break.
A few years back an outlaw warrier car broke like that in turn one. I then thought it was because of the excessive weight of the speck engine that caused it to break like it did. But after being told about how tubes are joined by some to save weight, maybe it was a reason that car broke too. I have no answer, I'm just a fan throwing out a thought on the break.
I saw the picture on facebook late last night and said a prayer after seeing it. I'm very happy to read today he walked away.
