The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints were long a staple in the annual list of special "can't miss" events at Stateline Speedway. New track owners Bill and Lynne Catania are pleased to announce the return of the popular '360’ sprint series set for July 19. The schedule had originally included a stop at a near-by speedway that has now closed. With the closing the date opened up and Catania seized the opportunity to have the sprinters return.
The winged, fire-breathing, alcohol-guzzling open wheeled racers run a staggering 35-race schedule in 2014 traveling all the way from Quebec through Ontario, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in their six-month tour. Their last stop at Stateline was July 12 and won by Tim Kelly. Only ten of the drivers racing in that most recent event are still with the tour 11 years later.
The current roster and points leaders include some of the top names in '360’ sprint car racing. Quebec's Steve Poirier currently leads the points as of July 1 having scored three wins, seven top fives, and eight top tens on the season. Poirier enjoys a substantial margin in the title chase over Antwerp, NY's Jeff Cook with Stephentown, NY's Matt Turner a distant third. Standout Chuck Hebing currently rides seventh in this season's points with Jessica Zemkin eighth.
According to Empire Super Sprint spokesperson Dean Reynolds a full field of sprinters is expected for this special addition to the schedule.
In regular racing the Blair's, Robbie and Max have been first at the checkers early in the season with a son-father 1-2 finish last week. With Max not able to start due to mechanical issue opening night, he is mired back in seventh in the quest for the first title of the new era. Robbie leads by 106 points after just two weeks over Matt Urban with Brent Rhebergen another 15 points behind Urban.
Opening night winner John Waters leads the Crate Late Model points with Scott Gurdak twenty points behind after leading until the final lap last week. Bob Dorman is third with last week's winner Max Blair all the way back in eighth due to a failure to start the feature on opening night.
Brent Rhebergen opened his Stateline season with a win and followed it up with a second last week, securing an early lead for the championship title by 28-points over week two winner John Boyd. Defending champion John Woodward is currently third, another seventeen pints back.
Bill Reeves has a slim two point margin over week two winner Brandon Groters in the Street Stock standings with Stan Davis third, 81-points behind Groters. Opening night winner Jason Covey failed to appear for week two so is back in eighth
Joe Beach, with good finishes each week, leads the quest for the Challenger Championship over opening night winner Ryan White with Roger Hall third.
