I was on my way to work Friday and after putting fuel my truck, it just died. I tried starting it again thinking it just stalled. but it wouldn't fire. Thankfully there was an Advance auto across the street. I purchased some starting fluid thinking it was carboned up and no go. It did try for a half a second. It also made a diesel kind of sound. Well the tow truck driver looked it over and said it was the fuel pump. I bought it and installed it and no go. So I checked for spark- no spark. I then replaced the coil and ignition module control. No go. Now the crank sensor. No go. The distributor is about a year old. Plugs and wires are new. Fuses are all good. What am I missing?

Fuel injectors plugged?? Small hole in the fuel line causing pressure loss in the fuel system??

I doubt it was bad gas dirtstudent. Every body else seemed to drive off without dying. D1RT, There is plenty of fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I released the pressure from the little nipple on the intake just to se if the rail held pressure. racer777 it is a Chevy k3500 7.4l
There is also a brand new fuel filter in it..
I've already put 450-500 into this and really don't want to spend any more.

pulled distributor a while back. Timing chain is good , rotor turnfine

Pick-up coil inside the Distributor would be a good guess . T
I don't think there is a pickup coil in the distributor. There is a coil and the ignition control module buried behind the fuel intake system. What a biatch to get to.

no gas, no spark, no compression, only reasons a motor won't fire. which is it? might be time to part with the old girl, hope this don't become a money pit. good luck.

Dude, instead of throwing money at it, you need to do these 3 FREE things FIRST... in this order:
- Verify it has spark at the plugs
if it is, you need to:
- Verify it is getting fuel into the cylinders (is throttle body spraying fuel?)
if it is, you need to:
- Verify compression

I went thru all that stuff with my 1993 .. Turned out it was the Fuel Pressure Regulator in the back of the throttle body .. was an $11 part and shuts off the spark when there is not enough fuel pressure at the throttle body .. so I changed that and the spark came back . didn't need to change the coil etc like I did .. Good Luck

Did you check the ignition switch? GM had many issues with those in the truck's back then. They will fail instantly with no warning. The oil pressure switch can fail and will shut the fuel off when it does so the engine will not run. Have never heard or seen a faulty fuel pressure regulator shut off spark as stated earlier. Been a gm tech for years and that is a new one.

Ok after much pissing around and after getting another persons advice(as well as all of you), I was told it might be a pickup coil under the rotor. Naysayer you may have hit this on the nose. But! there is a ignition control module mounted on a bracket along with the coil. This is attached to the back of the intake. Just above the distributor.
Can any body tell me for sure if there is a pickup coil under the rotor.
And trust me I don't want to spend any more on this than I absolutely have to. It's killing me. I paid 10 g for it and put 10 g in it in the last 4 yrs.
