After a few successful seasons in the sportsman division including a runner up finish in the 2013 Lernerville points standings, AJ Flick and his race team set their sights on a new challenge this year.Sprint car racing.

Our own Jerin Steele caught up with AJ and filed this feature article at TDN.

The young sprint car pilot described his first season in 410 sprints which featured some outstanding moments.

"We were excited for the challenge," Flick said. "Basically I had the weight of a (sportsman car) and doubled the horsepower. We had to rely on a lot of people. We talked to guys who my dad raced with in the modifieds and moved up into the sprints. We talked about anything that could help prepare me for that first night."

I was dissapointed when I found out he was not eligible for ROY status in western pa. Found out is is for actually new racers not just new to a class. Otherwise he was hands down I think best rookie racer in western pa. Actually thought he was going to pull off an upset or two couple nights this year.

A J deserves serious consideration for National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Rookie of the Year award.

Not eligible for my award as he was nominated for that several years back when he first drove Street Stocks!!  However, I am hoping he will be on the ballot for the 410 Sprint Car Rookie of the year from the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa.   Third generation driver, whose grandfather Pee Wee Flick was Lernerville Late Model champ in 1973!!

GOOD RACING TO ALL!!

He is well-deserving of such an award. Young Mr. Flick looked better most race nights than many of the veterans.

The whole team did a great job this year, considering that their background was primarily in BB Mods, asphalt Mods and Stocks. Wait until they get a handle on the Sprinters.

Considering no 305 experience either, I was mightily impressed by the whole team. That's a big step from stock cars and they picked it up very quickly. I doubt it would be easy to find another sprint rookie having had as much success in the first year of 410's without previous sprint experience. I have not followed many rookies outside of this Eastern area so it would be hard for me to compare. But I also do not believe the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame would consider these past details. Its all about the wins anymore!

It will be up to the voters on the panel!!   I have one vote, but that is all!!  Logan Wagner is also a deserving candidate, but he had a lot of 305 experience plus a lot more money that the Flick's had to work with!!

Austin Hogue did a heck of a job in Central Pa.
I'm not sure how many wins he had this year but I was at Lincoln when he won.
