Cumberland fairgrounds have a new investor that will be running 6-8 shows. The track will go back to the name Cumberland Speedway and run on Saturday's in conjunction with Bedford as fair as rules and classes.

The big question is can they make the track raceable?  It's one of the most poorly configured tracks in the country.

I genuinely hope it works out for the new crew, but it's going to take a lot of cash and know how to make the place something good.

I agree, I've been there 20-25 times for bigger shows since 1992 and can honestly say none were all that memorable. They have had a couple decent promotors, (like Ben Evans, and he was one of the longer lasting ones), but most came and went.

I wish the new promoters good luck, but Cumberland is a big track that rarely has much passing.

Yep..that would help get the straightaway speed up over about 150mph.  especially on the front stretch.  The place needs shortened....just like Bedford does!  Too Big.....Too Fast....= poor racing!  Thats the problem with Bedford as well!  Too Hard on equipment....thats why guys don't want to race there!  In the Day though, there were the Bedford/Cumberland Hero's!  The guys that raced at those two tracks exclusivley

Bob Salathe did a nice job with the place.  When he started the Big Kahuna it was a big deal with the 3 premier sanctioning bodies at the time racing over 3 nights.  Still the racing wasn't that good back then.  It's the only track I've ever seen that was packed so hard with rollers that it actually developed potholes.  It's a shame because it's a nice, scenic facility with ample parking and camping, but they really need to build a new racetrack there.  They could make a fortune with a Tyler County-style 1/4 mile bullring since it would be a one-of-a-kind in that region and produce much better racing than most of the tracks in the area.

if its to big and to fast for you then go to a shorter track. as for hard on cars if you have to slam somebody to pass them 9 times out of 10 you take yourself ot to.

Lm08 the problem is if it's too big and too fast for guys to afford to race there you end up with no cars and then no fans and then you close like has been seen countless times

The Rock is too big, fast, and boring for the fans so they have all gone to the shorter tracks.  You're using the same logic as the Miley's..."if you don't like it go somewhere else".  As you tell everybody that over the years they do actually go somewhere else so that is not a logical solution.  The best way to market something and be profitable is to be different and offer a better product than the other guys.  The Rock currently isn't any different than the other flat half miles in the area and it's certainly not any better than the other ones either.

im not saying if you dont like it go somewhere smaller. personely i prefer big and fast. but we only have short tracks around here

Not Quite!  I like a tacky racetrack.  Not an Ice rink!  But when the track is too fast..its bad racing!  The cars seem to form the "Mechanical Catipillar"   That resembles Nascar racing!  There ends up being follow the leader conditions with no passing!  As a kid...I can remember one of the best racers I ever saw!  it was at Jennerstown Speedway!  This was before the first Oil Embargo!  So they ran 35 lap features and 10 lap heats allways!  it was after that we went to 8 lap heats and 20-25 lap features!  Anyway...that particular night...Turk Burkett driving the Gold and White #500 57  chevy owned by Floyd Mussellman..  went to the back three times and still one the feature!  Talk about passing!  But that was what made racing fun to watch.  Cars being passed!  And cars that looked like cars!  Never going to happen again!

I have an honest question, Why is it the tracks fault if there is not passing? I mean I have seen lots of race tracks and they remain the same for every driver out there. The cars, set ups, drivers are all different, and adjustable.

I have been to several tracks when the bottom groove locks down and if you get your right side tires out of that groove you slide all the way to the wall and lose 4 spots. I don't care if your Jesus or Scott Bloomquist the only way to pass on that condition is the guy making a mistake infront of you or you chrome horning him out of the way. There is no adjustment on any car to allow you to pass a car in the rubber while you are in the icy slick marbles
