Just want to spread the word to owners of toterhomes. I have been told several things whether I need or do not need a CDL, well I just want to clarify that you most likely do need one. Even if it is registered as an RV like most of them are. It all depends on the vehicles GVWR.

* Does the vehicle or combination of vehicles have a manufactures weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 lbs?

If NO, You most likely do not need one.

If YES, Is the vehicle a combination vehicle towing a unit over 10,000 lbs GVWR? If YES you need a Class A CDL

If No, Does the vehicle have a GVWR over 26,000 lbs? If YES you need a Class B CDL

Hope this may help someone. Also if your truck has air brakes you will need an air brake endorsement.

Same all states, if your trailer is over 10,000 gvw, even though your toter is licensed motor home, gotta have class A CDL.

I'm building one of those "Tiny Homes" for a customer, was wondering if I would need a CDL license for towing it around? It's only 20 foot long but is close to the 13'6" height limit for over the road. Its' going to weigh every bit of 10,000 lbs  and then some. Here is a pic

If the trailer/mini home is over 10,000 lbs they will need to get a combination plate for the vehicle they are using to tow it with.

Question is that trailer rated over 10,000 lbs? Looks like a 7k or possibly 10k trailer.

I checked the tag on the tongue, and is rated for 10,000 lbs. The thing I'm worried about is the height.

If it's over 13'6" you will need an oversize permit as well as making sure your customer watches height signs

I built it to stay under the 13"6" height limit. It's at 13'2" as it sits right now. Add 2" for the metal roofing and ridge cap. It's going to be close, but under. I figure It will drop a few inches when I take it off the leveling jacks.

Building it 10,000 or more pounds when max capacity is 10,000 sounds genius ....

Key word here is COMMERICAL VEHICLE. Commerical Vehicle does not include any motor home or recreational trailer operated solely for personal use. This is located under  COMMERICAL DRIVER'S LICENSE fact sheet. If you use it for a business, it is considered a commerical vehicle.

Commercial or not a class c driver can not operate a vehicle over 26000lbs legally.

Once you put a sticker on the side of a toter/ trailer like sponsor name . you need you would need commercial plates. As you can see most big toters are plain colors with nothing on sides.

Hamacek01, Sorry but that's not correct. On everyone's PA class C drivers license you can only drive <26,000 lbs. Anything over it you need a CDL period! No matter what if you are over 26,001 lbs you need a CDL. Even the guys that are driving RV's over 26k need CDL's but you can get a CDL but not be able to drive commercially. If you are using a toter to transport a race car you need a cdl cause you are making money. Trust me drive through New Castle and DOT will have your hauler towed. I am just trying to make everyone aware that they are cracking down. PA State Police DOT are going to be having a class at New Castle School of trades soon and I will post the info on here so everyone can attend.

Tried taking my CDL test driving racing rig , plain black no lettering. Peterbilt conversion RV REGISTERED in PA air brakes, 2 car hauler , 78 feet long. I was told you need a commercial REGISTERED VEHICLE to take the test for a CDL Class A. ..... So then they tell me I need a CDL Class A with Air Brakes to drive this racing rig MOTORHOME & 42 ' Trailer.... BUT "NO" you can not use it to take the test because it is an RV and a trailer. Now they say I need a "NON Commercial CDL" ????? Left LMFAO because I've had a CDL for years just enjoyed 5 PA employees arguing about interuptation of the laws.
