Enough to purchase and put together equipment, new or old, capable of winning.
Depending on what you race, the cost may be very little or a lot.

@dirtstudent ..... Name a person that is winning consistently with old ,worn out Racecars and parts. Lol ..... I didn't think so , old worn out junk doesn't beat the newest , high tech stuff these days

You cant win a Championship with money .. you need a driver too!
Money Cubed X work squared times work to the 10th power plus ... work .. plus help from people who know what they are doing ( iE shut up and listen! ) = Championship.
If you want to talk about underdogs there were many .. Alan kulwiki Tim Shaffer are two
example : Tim Shaffer took two cars to Fla in February one time .. was leading a preliminary race on Saturday night.. came up on a lapped car .. got tangled up and flipped down the front straight about 6 times ... got his head back together and proceeded to take all the good parts from the wrecked car and put them on the back up car all that night and got about 3 hrs of sleep the next day to race in the Sunday big show where he won that and pocketed 26,000 ! Now can you do that ? Money didn't win that race ! if you can work that hard at it .. you can be a champion too .. most people don't try that hard and have no chance at it because they think its all about money! As we know .. even some Millionaires on this site with Clu29 cars still ride around in the back .

Depends on where you race, some tracks if you show up every week you might win the points. Points usually go to the most consistant runners, not always the biggest winner.

Spent. 40K. What did that get me. 1 car, Used, 1 motor, 2 wings. Fun, he'll no. Tire cost ridiculous. Knowledge, funny, not enough. Spent more and more, and went farther backwards. The only smart thing we did was put a pretty paint job on it and sold it at the Highlands mall show. Less than 50 cents on the dollar. Woo-hoo. You may think the equipment is decent, you may think you have what it takes. That leads ALL RACERS to spend more money. Would I do it again. He'll ya.

Point champs finish in most cases that's it. Most guys chase money shows cause it makes u better running with faster guys and payout is worth it. Winning a championship u get a jacket and a fund to take crew out for brews on local bases. Running weekly close to home helps. Racing is a hobby and most guys that are wealthy have huge advantage. New tires weekly and several high dollar engines and back up cars. Most people barely have 1 of each.

A "under dog " is a lot different than being way under funded. There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE... They don't got spare parts , motors , cars !!!!

BINGO. There are sometimes drivers who place higher in the points than any feature finish all season.
If at first you don't succeed, then maybe you just suck.

Emory Rinehart Jr is still running the same car and equipment that he ran back in 2002 and is still winning races. he is limited to how much he can run due to schedule conflicts with his personal life, but he still wins when he shows up and is doing so with less money than most guys are pouring into tires alone.

That is one of several reasons that I only award points to the top three for my Cavalcade Points. And there are guys out there who finish higher in the points then they ever do in a race. Consistency and just being there every week have a lot to do with point races be they weekly tracks or most touring series!!
