When a dirt-track is sold to a company not strictly in the car-racing business, fans start to get a little squeamish.

Some expressed concern last week when news surfaced that western Pennsylvania gem Lernerville Speedway had been sold to Tomson Scrap Metal, a local company that has a number of businesses in the region.

There is no reason to worry. Lernerville Speedway will continue in its current capacity and is in good hands moving forward.

Tomson Scrap Metal is entrenched at the Sarver facility. The family has had a box at the speedway, sponsored cars that have competed at the track and believe investing in the community is important.

"The one thing is that if you control it, you can control the way it goes," Ted Tomson, a partner in the family-owned business said. "It's nice to have someone local own it that understands local people and issues.

"Don Martin's trucking company hauled our scrap, and the speedway has been a major part of the community for a long time. We want to keep it that way."

The Tomson family purchased the speedway from the Vicis Capital Master Fund Trust — a hedge fund investor with the World Racing Group — for $1 million consideration, according to the Butler County Recorder of Deeds.

The World Racing Group purchased the speedway from Don Martin's family in 2005 before switching over to a lease situation with Vicis.

This acquisition adds to an already stout Tomson family ownership profile. They also control the Brackenridge Heights Golf Course, Stanson Paper Processing and are heavily involved in harness racing.

Tomson owns four farms where horses are born and raised. And according to Ted Tomson, there is no plan for a fifth on the grounds of Lernerville Speedway.

"The World Racing Group will lease the track the rest of the year," Tomson said. "We live up to our agreements when we get involved in something.

"We're going to take it over next year. We own the facility, and we are going to operate it. If it was going to go away, we wouldn't get involved."

Continued Tomson, "I want to visit my grandkids here, not in Atlanta or Texas. People leave because there are no jobs, and these businesses provide jobs for them. Hopefully, we can persuade them to come in and be a part of our organization."

Lernerville Speedway hosts a Friday night program featuring the 410 Sprint Car division. They are joined by the Super Late Models, Big Block Mods and Sportsman/Stock.

A number of sanctioning bodies also hold special events at the speedway. The All Star Circuit of Champions, World of Outlaw Sprint Car and Late Model Series' are on the season slate.

That likely won't change in the future. As for the facility itself, any decisions concerning the structure will be made over the winter months.

"We're keeping [the program] the way it is with the racing we have," Tomson said. "It's been shown that it works by the people who have been running it.

"It's a Friday night event. It's not seven days a week, and you have to be careful you don't have too many big events.

"Lernerville is a fabric of this community. It fits our other businesses and allows us to invest in the community."

Am I correct to say Lernerville reportedly sold for $3.5M just about ten years ago but now is only worth $1M?

I'd say Mrs Martin made out pretty well selling it to Vicis and Mr Tomson got one heck of a deal buying it from them......

Very true words, Legend. Somethings value is ONLY what someone will actually pay for it.

I'd say it's worth every penny of $1mil, but the list of people stupid enough to want to own a dirt track in western pa is probably real short. If you're going to buy one, this is the one though. It's gotta be profitable at least.

I'm also wondering how profitable something is if it is worth $2.5M less than it was paid for 10 years ago? This price seems to be the real estate and track assets and maybe little to nothing for the business itself? When a track loses 71% of its value in 10 years that's scary stuff for dirt track fans in general.

10 years ago they were investing in what they thought was a promising future. Now, the future looks pretty ugly, so it's a tough investment to sell. Surprised they didn't just hang onto it rather than take such a loss, unless they've made $2.5mil and are breaking even.

That would be net profit of $250K a year running a dirt track 6 months a year. Not likely lol. If it was no way they'd want to sell a cash cow like that. I too am surprised they didn't hold onto it unless they were losing money.

Vince you consider 250k annually off of a 3.5mil investment in an insanely high risk risk junk bond status venture a " cash cow " ???

Look at the industry. You really think a local dirt track running maybe 20 times a year is making $250K net profit? On the average Friday night with 80 cars in the pits they're pocketing $12,500 a night? Are you insane lol?

I didn't say anything about what the ville makes ... I just said 250k off a 3.5 mil investment isn't a " cash cow " a real " investment " would be compounding anyway not straight line .... Investing in a race track seems as reasonable and prudent as investing in a blown glass dildo collection

I am pretty confident Lernerville is still successful from a financial standpoint. I can see WRG selling the place due to the lack of income they are now making compared to the income after the initial purchase. But in my opinion, they are the ones that decreased Lernerville's value. I believe Tomson's got a great deal. They still have Don Martin's name on the title and easily have the ability to re-raise Lernerville's value and recreate the track to what made it one of the most elite dirt tracks in the history of the sport. They just need to listen to driver and fan input, and we, as fans, need to respect the new owners and give them time and room to makes the proper changes before we begin to bi7ch and ridicule them like we have become accustomed to with WRG as ownership.

Just my opinion.

I know Lernerville is not in the same league as Eldora but it still is a decent facility.

I don't believe there is as much physically that needs fixed with facility as there is operationally to get more cars to the track.

I think taking on the tire rule to open up to allow AR's and Hoosiers of certain compounds could be a start.

But as said I think the starting point is to listen to the drivers and the fans and find out what they want. Then try to blend and come up with a plan to implement.

But then again it's all easy when your not the one making the decisions.

1 thing that could help get more cars is to lower the cost of pit gates. I know by the time they pay the insurance theirs not much left, but trying to get people to come help on the car on a regular basis is tuff. Pay that money and really don't get to watch a whole lot of racing cause their prepping the car.
