(Hesston, PA) Hesston Speedway kicked off the month of June with the “Blade Runner.” New track preparation procedures generated a renewed, multi-groove racing surface and a huge amount of passing. Darren Miller of Mt. Joy captured the win in the first appearance of the Laurel Highlands and PASS Racesaver 305 Sprints over a large crowd. Rick Singleton of Huntingdon raced from deep in the field to claim his second Semi-Late feature of 2015. Greg Moore from Defiance won his third Cadet feature of the season. Austin Johnson from Doylesburg was a new winner from a high starting position in the Freedom Powersports Hobby-Modified. Garrett Watkins was also a new winner in the Dave’s Auto Body and Towing Roadrunners.
A full field of 25 305 Sprints invaded the high banks of Hesston as the Laurel Highlands and PASS Racesaver regions combined for this event. Hunter McCracken and Greg Dobrosky lead the field to the green of the 25 lap feature with McCracken bolting out to the initial lead. McCracken built up a sizeable lead, but fourth starting Miller began to catch him and made a pass for the lead in lapped traffic on lap eleven.
Sixth starting Zach Newlin then began to challenge Miller for the lead. Newlin passed Miller but the pass was negated by a caution. On lap 19, the red flag appeared when third running McCracken flipped. Miller lead the remaining laps to take the checker followed Newlin, tenth starting Bill Jones Jr., ninth starting Nathan Gramley and 18th starting Jake Waters.
14th starting Ken Duke, 17th starting Drew Ritchey, 24th, starting Reed Thompson, Dobroksy and Ryan Lynn rounded out the top ten. Heat race wins went to Miller, John Martin and Jones.
The Semi-Late 25 lap feature was deja-vu of opening night as Rick Singleton raced from this tenth place starting position to take the win. George Dixon, Jr. lead the first eleven laps while Singleton powered through the field. Singleton made the winning pass on lap 12 and lead the remaining laps to take his second win of the year from that starting position. Ralph Morgan, Jr. moved by Dixon two laps later to take second in his 604 crate motor car.
At the finish following Singleton was Morgan, who also finished second on opening night. Dixon crossed the line in third with Mike Altobelli, Jr. and ninth starting Robbie Black following. Josh Berrier, Brad McGinnis, also in a 604 crate motor car, Curtis Heath, Kenny Yoder and Dan Boyd rounded out the top ten. Heat wins went to Altobelli and Singleton.
Greg Moore roared from his third starting position to take the lead on the first lap of the 20 lap Cadet feature. While Moore raced in the front, sixth starting Cris Edwards won the battle for second. Matt Hugill raced from tenth to take third with Ken Singer, Phil Boden and Devin Weyandt following.
Jesse Snyder finished seventh and a borrowed car after his feature-winning car was damaged in a barrel roll in the heat race. Mike Desch, Chad Parks, and Ridge Bookwalter rounded out the top ten. Heat wins went to Weyandt and Moore.
The Freedom Powersports Hobby-Modified 15 lap race was the most intense race of the night with eleventh starting Austin Johnson taking his first Hesston win. Mike Benton lead the first two laps in his first Hesston appearance, with Shawn Shoemaker taking the point on lap nine. Ben Krause took second from Benton on lap 5. After a restart on lap nine, Shoemaker, Johnson and Krause went three wide for the lead for half a lap with Johnson coming out on top.
Meanwhile, Alex Boozel was racing through the field from his required 15th place starting position for winning three consecutive features. Boozel began to challenge Johnson. A caution on lap 14 put the race into overtime. Boozel surged into the lead on the restart, but a flat tired ruined his strong run. Johnson lead the final two laps with Terry Norris, in a stock-type Hobby car finishing second. Benton finished third with Boozel using the strong cushion of the track to surge from the rear to fourth in the final tow laps.
Shoemaker, Troy Eckenrode, Krause, Preston Imler, Brian Shaw and Kadden Smith rounded out the top ten. Heat wins were taken by Norris and Benton.
Eight starting Garrett Watkins wasted no time going to the front of the 12 lap Dave’s Auto Body and Towing Roadrunner feature. Watkins took the lead on lap two and held off the challenges of sixth starting Tim Osheehan and ninth starting Andrew Moist for the win. Following those three drivers were Zach Moist, tenth starting Jared Rudy, Shawn Miller, Michael Jack Wityk, Rusty Focht, Bryan Benton and Heath Leonard. Osheehan won the heat race.
Next Saturday, June 13 the Hobby-Modifieds and Roadrunners take center stage in the “Charlie Walter, Jr. 42.” The 24 lap Hobby-Modified championship will pay $442 to win while the 18 lap Roadrunner championship will pay $342 to win. The speedy Pennsylvania Mini Stock Pro-4’s will make their only appearance of 2015 with a 22 lap championship paying $500 to win. The Semi-Lates will race 25 laps for $700 and the Cadets will race 20 laps for $400.
On Saturday, June 20, the Mid-Atlantic Modifieds E-mods will attack the high banks for “Revenge of the Mods.” The 30 lap E-mod championship will pay $800 with the Semi-Lates, Cadets, Hobby-Modifieds and Roadrunners running full programs.
“Motor Mountain” is located in the scenic Raystown Lake and mountain country of central PA and provides a wonderful opportunity for race fans and race teams to make a complete weekend getaway when attending the racing events at Hesston. All fans are provided an excellent view of the action, with grandstand seating and drive-in viewing built high above the racing surface.
