Martz masters the Monster in a thrilling Ed Laboon Memorial! $2,017 PPMS winner!

Rusty Martz claimed the biggest win of his career last night at the 4th annual Ed Laboon Memorial. Martz was finally able to claim the $2,017 prize after strong showings of 2nd and 3rd in his last two attempts. An impressive field of 51 SUNOCO Sportsman cars was on hand for the 3rd event of the Penn Ohio Pro Stock Series. Christian Schneider set fast time for the event, with the top 26 cars within one second of each other in qualifying! The 6 heat race winners were Christian Schneider, chassis guru Chris Schneider, Lernerville regular Corey McPherson, making his first appearance in his Sportsman car, Martz, Dave McManus, and 2013 Ed Laboon Memorial winner Jeff Broniszewski.

The fast dash consisting of the 6 heat winners determined the starting line-up for the race, with Christian and Chris Schneider setting the front row. The two B mains added Ricky Steigerwald, Jamie Duncan, A.J. Poljack, and Rush Crate veteran Justin Lamb, who was piloting the #23 normally driven by David Ostrander.

Christian Schneider quickly set the pace from his pole position, with Chris Schneider and Rusty Martz in tow. Dave McManus lost the handle in turn one on lap 3, collecting the 965 of Andy Buckley, the 68X of Danny Rich, the 66 of Tim Burns, and 2014 winner Curt Bish, who had quickly moved from 13th to 8th in just 3 laps. McManus and Bish were able to continue. During the caution, Jeff Broniszewski was able to pit for a flat tire and return to the field.

Christian Schneider then set the pace for the next handful of laps, stretching the lead over Chris Schneider only to have several cautions continue to bunch the field back up. For the next ten laps, Schneider would lead Chris Schneider, Martz, Steve Dapolito, and McPherson. On lap 14, the two leaders started to approach lap traffic, and tragedy would strike the pair. The 67J of Jamie Duncan broke a rear control arm which sent him sideways entering turn 3, collecting both Schneiders in the process. Dapolito would also have to pit with a flat right rear tire. Christian Schneider was done for the night. This gave the lead to Martz, with McPherson closely behind.

A caution on lap 18 would set up a 2 lap shootout for the $2,017 to win prize, with McPherson chasing a $500 bonus to win the race with a Rush Crate legal engine. Martz went on to hold off McPherson by .233 seconds at the line, with hard charger Wayne Carbo coming from 22nd to 3rd, first time visitor Brian Rhed 4th and Penn Ohio Series founder Shaun Hooks 5th. Inaugural winner Bob Schwartzmiller was 6th, Bish was able to rebound from 17th to 7th, Broniszewski came from 28th to 8th, Chris Schneider rebounded from his crash to claim 9th, and Dapolito came back from his flat to round out the top 10.

The Dobs Auto non-qualifiers race will be made up as part of the next Penn Ohio Series event on Saturday August 8th, which will be a 20 lap, $1,000 to win, $100 to start, no entry fee show. All drivers in attendance who did not make the A main will be eligible for the Dobs race; those choosing not to return will still receive their $100 tow money.

Fast time: Christian Schneider, Hard Luck: Christian Schneider
Hard Charger: Wayne Carbo, Furthest Traveler: Kyle Shannon

What a turn out huh ? Vince, don't know of you or your father. Good words have been said of both of you. I hope you had a moment to understand he was watching over the racing and he would be proud of you I'm sure. To have a field of 51 cars had to surprise even you. I hope that you will be able to continue this race in his honor. Many words have been said about the facility. Please, don't lose site of the great thing you are doing for yourself in remembering your father. Other promotors I am sure took notice. Promoting is not a easy task. You've done a good job and I'm sure it got noticed.

Don't forget we are also doing the Dobs Auto NQ make up feature on Saturday August 8th.  Again, anyone who qualified (or attempted to, Gary Smith I'm looking at you) will be eligible for this feature.  Some folks scratched after qualifying or wrecked in their heat, so I have them tagging the field based off of qualifying times.

Again- $317/$200/$175/$125 for the top 4 positions (since we are paying the tow money this week, you would only be paid the difference ($217/$100/$75/$25),  5th on back will not receive any additional new money, but if you choose not to come back obviously you keep your $100 tow money.  If you plan on racing 8/8 anyway, this will be nice to get an extra feature in if you are one of the 23 cars listed below.  Let me know of any questions if this is not clear.

Line up:

33K  Joey Koteles        1M  Bryan Mitchell
21W  Chris Withers       92H  Bobby Heim
17K  Jackson Humanic  55L  Bob Lipinski
T3  Dom Surra               25L  Mark Lee
7 Eric Piotrowski            21D  Daniel Black
96 Dave Lee                  73 Shaun Neubert
21D  Donald DeZarn      17L  Kyle Shannon
3x  Travis Norman          56 Bryan Wagner
27W  Steve Webb          45jr  Todd Weldon
0 Josh Langer                 7 Mike Clark
46 Joe Chamberlain      17M Rusty Moore
BAD1 Gary Smith

So I just did the math and we paid out $12,109 this weekend to the local Sportsman teams with NO entry fees!  Hopefully this helps guys get some new tires or helped pay for tires and fuel.  This is before the contingency awards such as the graphics package discounts, various racing products, PCTC giveaways, etc.  Thanks to all the teams, sponsors, Mileys and the fans and drivers for making this what it is today!

This Saturday and the Ed Laboon was not great for our team. We had problems at the shop. Missed hot laps, nearly missed qualifying and for all those reasons we were not very fast.

Saying that between the heats and mains we were changing gears and our jackstands sunk in the mud and my car fell on top of me. I am OK, just some bruising and soreness.

I want to thank everyone from the surrounding crews who lifted the car off of me. It was a scary situation and many rushed to help.

Also Hats off to Vince on putting together a great event!

Thanks!

Bhh Dow only read the sponsors he approved of ... It's less offensive to not read any than to have some clown read all but 1 because he doesn't like you ....
