What happened to Doug Surra in the Pure Stocks?  He was looking good.  And Colton Gearhart in the Late Models?  That 25L team seems to have the worst luck.

The 25L has been victim to a lot of bad luck this year. Unfortunately, last night was at the hand of MULTIPLE poor decisions made by the track. An electrical issue caused a DNF in the heat race. There was no talk of a b-main (26 cars, so you never know what a track will do in that case). Right before cars went on track for meet-the-drivers night (I don't call it fan appreciation night if they still charge the fans full price) they were making the decision to run a b-main to send 2 cars home. The car was really fast in the b-main as he went from the back to 2nd, but sustained significant body damage on the first lap maneuvering through a crash in front of him. as soon as the b-main was over the feature was already lining up (only 1race between b-main and feature). There was just enough time to duct tape/rivet a nose together enough to not fall apart. No time to even glance at tires. Tried to start the car as the feature was pulling on the track and the starter button hung up. He tried to get a push start but they went green while the push truck was pushing through the pits. VERY disappointed in the decision making there last night. Apparently the folks making the decisions have never worked on a car or paid attention to what needs done to a car between runs on the track.

Sounds like sour grapes 714d. Every driver and crew knows the feature order. If they run a consy and the late models are the second feature that's how it is. I don't care if you're at the Bird or Eldora. How do you figure it's the track's fault your car got banged up or you had electrical issues? What do the rules say about how many cars start the feature? If it's 24 and 26 show, then there's going to be a consy. It's really not that complicated.

I'm not complaining about the order so much as the lack of communication. Every decision was last minute. I don't blame the track for being in a position to HAVE to run in a b-main. No team wants to do that, but it's part of the sport. We looked for b-main lineups, but we're told they were trying to decide what to do as cars were going out for the fans. How do you prepare for a b-main with 5 minutes notice? Then to ask for a push start, and the track crew communicates that they are pushing the car and it is coming on track but they just say screw it and throw the green. It is a lot of sour grapes for sure, but easily avoidable. Not asking for special treatment, but sure seemed to get the shaft all night.

This just an opinion so please forgive me in advance. I know 24 cars on that track is a lot let alone 26 but I think sending 2 cars home to save the track $100 is pretty ridiculous. They pay $50 tow fee (which is $25 less than TM) so sending home 2 cars saved them a whopping $100. Pretty crude considering it was fan appreciation night and the fans were there to watch all their favorites. I can see sending home 6 or 8 cars but 2. Without those cars there is NO SHOW!!!! I think some track owners and promoters have lost sight of that fact. Especially after making all the cars buy a $500 transponder. Just my opinion!!!

the best part of the late model race was watching the 53 blow a tire. as far as fan appreciation nite goes all the track did for the fans was send them home with pockets full of topsoil. the concession stands were out of pizza and candy at intermission. the flag man should do his job and watch the track instead of socializing with fans under caution then he would know whats going on.

So using your logic, if 35 late models show up then the track is obligated to start them all and not offend anyone ?

The track is'nt big enough for the 24 they've been trying to start.

Go fast or go home. That's the way it's always been.

Everybody doesn't get a prize in this game.

They should only be starting about 18 cars on that track because that's about all that finish, sometimes less than that.

As far as the transponders go, they should be using them to time trial for starting position..... As they are intended to be used .... instead of running heat races. Then the fast cars are up front out of the junk and can
race.

Special treatment is exactly what you're asking for. If you have a maximum starting rule, but you pick and choose when you're going to enforce it. What use is the rule? The bottom line is, you're wanting to blame the race track for following their rules, but what if Davenport or Owens showed up at the Bird and had the same issues, and they said well we're going to bend the rule and let 26 cars start the feature. Every late model driver in the pits would be crying foul. Just out of curiousity, why didn't you push the car to the track entrance gate? You better believe if it were my car or my team, I would have grabbed 4 guys and pushed the car out on the track. The cars only weigh 2,300lbs and can easily be pushed to track gate. I know, because I've done it.

As far as preparing for the B-Main. Weren't you already prepared for the feature? What major changes are you going to make to the car for a b-main? Softer right rear, maybe? If you can't change a tire in 5 minutes, them you have bigger problems than having to run a last chance qualifier race.

Think anyone who's ever raced, has had a night where they felt like they were wronged.  There is a rule in the book that say cars must start under their own power.  If you have an issue like that it's at the discretion of the track to let you get pushed or not.  I understand being upset that they dropped the green while you were still in the pits but unfortunately that's how our sport is!  Go or Go home!  And with the skill level of some of the drivers there, I agree they really only should start 18 or 20 cars.  After 3 cautions they go single file anyway, and there's always those drivers that have to win the race in the first lap.  once they go single file there are cars coming out of turn 2 as the green flag is dropped.  I mean it is what it is.  don't complain about it.  you're not the only one that has had these things happen

25 cars started the feature on 7-11-15 with no b-main. So, 25 cars is ok in a 24 car field but 26 is out of the question? I agree 18 should really be the max but if you want to draw a line you better draw a line. I'm also not complaining of being ready for the b-main. The car was ready for the feature as pointed out above. There was however no time to do anything between the b and the feature. Tell any class that they have to run their heat and then line right back up for the feature. That won't fly. That's exactly what the drivers who ran were asked to do. The micros went on the track and the lates lined up.

Are you telling us the micro Sprint feature took less than 5 minutes? I doubt it. You said you were ready for the feature and needed a push. So, I'll ask again, why not push the car to the track entrance gate?

The sprint feature didn't take long. I was told it went caution free. We didn't push it ourselves because there was a track official there with a headset on to push it for us and communicating that he was doing just that. Ask again, and I'll tell you again. The car will be back. It will be better and I still like this track more than most. (Been screwed over worse and/or seen way worse at other tracks). Just putting it out there that all these issues were pointed out ahead of time and kind of giving an "I told you so" and hoping with a little time to think about it, they can be more prepared since big late model fields seem to be the norm this year.

That is on you then bub. Why would you stand around waiting while the cars are starting to roll off. When the push truck didn't show, you should have pushed the car yourself. At minimum, you should have pushed the car to the line up area. You screwed the pooch, own it.

Standing around? That's the whole reason it upset me. We busted our asses to get it ready in zero time. If you would have asked me Saturday night why I was standing around you probably would have received my frustrations in the jaw. There was no standing around and they knew that. No one waited for a push. It was available. Is this getting too complicated for you? I dont even want to go on about it, my piece has been spoken, but you keep asking me the same questions over and over. Not like someone got screwed out of a $50k win, just a simple problem with a simpler solution that someone asked about and I answered. We will see if it did any good Saturday night.

Just some people don't get it. Guess maybe you should be in pits and see what went on instead of in bleachers thinking you know what was happening. Then maybe you'd understand it more instead of repeating yourself.

Being that you just ran a B-main and advanced to the feature they shoulda gave you enough time to get your car ready for the feature. But on the same token if the cars are lined up & ready to go & you're not there then you don't race. Sounds like kinda lose lose situation for you & that sucks. Good luck next week

I'm just not buying it. I've been in the pits for 25 years with my father and uncle and then with my brother and we've run dozens of consies, many of which the driver did not have time to get out of the car because we were the first feature. So I'm well aware of what has to be done. We never whined or belly ached or blamed the track for what they did or didn't do. If we made the show it was on us, just like if we didn't that was on us too. Like I said, own it. It's not the tracks fault, or the officials fault, it's a lack of preparation.

By the way, that micro Sprint feature took almost 10 minutes, that doesn't account for pushing them off and post race victory pics, etc. That's at least 15 minutes, and I'm being conservative.
