OK, once again here is a CPS rumor? Or not? Heard in the past couple of days that yet again someone has leased the track and is going to put dirt on it? Is this a done deal that everyone knows about, which means I am once again behind the times? I do see that the Super Cup race has been moved to Jennerstown.

I haven't heard or seen anything about the track since they announced they moved the final Super Cup show to Jennerstown. I think the hot ticket is to paint the track surface brown, and promote it as a "dustless oval." No dust, no ruts, no worries....

I heard this same rumor this weekend. I will believe it when I see it. I'd love this track to go back to dirt as would many people in the area. We'll see what happens I guess. I don't know what Suhoney is talking about issues when it was dirt. As I recall the only issue was the fact that it wasn't the full half mile as dirt. This track always had a decent turn out when it was dirt. The original operator didn't do it right, then Bainey's bought it. Bainey's are asphalt drivers they wanted an asphalt track. plain and simple. This track could be great as dirt and if run properly.

Well that's two of us that heard the same story, and probably from two different sources...within the rumor I heard the configuration of the track was not going to change. The only way the track would make it as asphalt if you could get NASCAR trucks or something like that here, but that would take a ton of money to do.
I like the dustless oval idea.

with the dirt on top of the asphalt it just ran off after heavy rain and thus caused all the deep ruts and damage that helped the baineys choose to shut it down...if they wanna make it dirt again they need to tear off the asphalt

Definately need to rip asphalt up if someone would try it again, otherwise why waste their time.

I can almost guarantee you that the asphalt will never be ripped off that track.

I would like that guarantee in writing written by a lawyer and notarized.

That's not necessary if you put enough dirt on it and maintain it the right way. Fulton up in New York is just dirt laid on top of the asphalt and it's got a fantastic surface. Albany Saratoga was dirt, then asphalt, then back to dirt and the current surface is just dirt on asphalt and it's as racy a track as you'll find anywhere.

I agree with baconbits. I'm not convinced that the asphalt under the dirt was really a problem. I think the problem was not enough dirt on top of the asphalt. Most of the problems on race nights were the ruts that developed at the entrance to turn 1, which didn't have asphalt under it. If anything, the asphalt provides a good, solid, stable base for the top layer of dirt, and the asphalt won't absorb the moisture from the top layer of dirt. The year that Baineys bought the track, they put new clay on, and only ran a few races, so it really didn't have time to knit and cure with the previous stuff. That winter and spring were really wet with heavy rains that did wash away a lot of the top layer.
Another thing I remember about CPS was they always packed the track so tight that after hot laps it looked like it had gone through a whole night of racing already. It got dusty really early in the heats. They would water before the features, but with the track packed so tight, the water didn't absorb very deep and once that top layer got blown off it got dusty again.

I don't know a whole lot about track prep or how to build a track, but I would think that the asphalt would provide a good base, and if it was built properly with good drainage and clay, you wouldn't have any issues with the asphalt. But that's just my Engineering mind at work. I could be wrong....lol

One think I don't think a lot of people realize about dirt tracks is that the actual racing surfaces aren't usually that deep. The average dirt track racing surface is all of 6-12 inches deep.

How many truck loads of good CLAY would it take to cover that big 1/2 mile track at 6-12 inches deep?

Assuming that the track will be 1/2 mile long at the outside wall, with a 75 feet wide racing surface, with the clay at 12" deep, and your hauling with a truck at 15 cubic yards per loads...........it would require 445.25 truck loads

I am pretty sure that track is 1/2 half mile on the inside and close to 5/8 or better on the outside...middle of the track is of course the correct way to measure, but it's bigger than a half on the outside.

Remember too, the dirt was removed from the track when Bainey had a small fleet of tri-axles. Those are no longer in the stable.

Hammer time, you are correct on all points!! Parts of Sharon are asphalt, Hickory was dirt over asphalt, as was Blanket Hill....
