It is poor maintenance of the truck owner that is the reason Chevy breaklines rust out. So you deserve the $1,800.oo bill to replace those rusted out lines.

Pretty sure brake lines rust on every car/truck in this part of the country. Why is it supposed to be the fault of the manufacturer? There are enough ridiculous recalls out there. Replace them yourself. They come as a prebent kit from gm for less than $200. $1800 is a scam.

Seeing how he's complaining and acting like it's someone else's problem that his lines rotted out, the shop probably quoted him on the high end so they don't have to deal with him.

Rusted out brake lines on Chevy trucks is such a problem that GM makes kits to replace all of the lines with a new coating on them.  Other vehicles have rust problems also just the Chevys seem to be the worst. I think a lot has to do with the liquid they put on the roads to melt the salt, things have been getting worse since they started using that.

When I do them, which is pretty often, I replace them with copper nickel line. It seems to be better but more expensive than any other line out there right now and I can do the whole job at $750. So if someone is getting $1800 for this job then I can see why people are pissed.

They charge a grand where I work at for labor and GM line kit, more if you need calipers when bleeders brake off.

A lot of under-truck rust issues are related to the surface on which you park.  I had a gravel driveway and had a lot of rust issues (brake lines, tailgate hinges, leaf spring mounts, to name a few) on my 11 year old Silverado.  I recently purchased a new GMC Sierra because of these issues, and I paved my driveway.

The Chinese steel has to meet the same specs . It's cheap because the don't have pollution controls or labor laws

Why doesn't any of these manufacturers run brake lines thru the inside of the kick panels like subaru did with some models in the 90's like the justy.. pull the plastic panel off today and you will see like new brake lines no weather no corrosion

i would think that dont cause they have to enter and exit somewhere. Just cause they stay nice inside doesn't make them easier to change when they rot out. And they will rot right where they enter and exit faster than completely exposed lines.

and of course, they won't use stainless, because that would mess up the "planned obsolescence"

They don't use stainless because it's only a regional issue due to our road maintenance. Imagine, if stainless would cost $5 more per vehicle, how many millions they would spend that (through their eyes) is completely unnecessary. They have to keep costs down. Vehicles are expensive enough. And through the rockers? Have you seen what happens to the rockers of ALL trucks. Pack full of road grime and it's the first place to rot.

Just wait till they all go with electronic calipers, then we will have no more issues. In a perfect world lol. That stuff is going to be even worse than rusted lines.
