Sad news. MANY great memories of Clate, and I wasn't even born to see most of his career. There can't be many drivers at ANY level who have a career that long and still be on top of the game when they hang it up. He will be missed

Absolutely one of our areas super stars of racing. I believe he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2003.

He was always a thrill to watch race on dirt or asphalt. He will be missed dearly by all of his friends and family.

Rest in piece Clate.

Clate Husted.

He raced all over the North East, heavily in Central PA and on both dirt and asphalt.

One of Western Pa"s all time greats for sure.  For al of you that were too young to remember him racing at such places as Clearfield, Marion Center and everywere in a asphalt modified, you missed one of the best bar none.

One of the smoothest drivers I ever witnessed driving on dirt.   Clate Husted. Blackie Watt and Bob Wearing were born of the same mold and of the three in my opinion Clate just might have been the better of the three.

RIP

Those who didn't get to see him race before Clearfield paved, really missed a man that could put on one hell of a show. I saw him on more than one occasion climb out one car after winning the feature and then get into a totally different type of car and win that race too. HE was my childhood hero, I have a picture of Irv Frankhousers #3 late model with Clate in victory lane. It wasn't till near mid season that they got that car completely together and Clate took the checkers in it's debut.

Everyone who knew Clate has a great Clate Husted story and here's mine. I was with Charlie and Chucky Records at the Central Mountains car show at the Clearfield Driving Park back when they had race cars as part of the show. We were all just standing around when Clate and his crew pulled in and unloaded his car (asphalt LM). After they were done they came walking down towards us and when they were close enough Chucky says "hey there's that old man that had couldn't race on dirt anymore so he had to switch to asphalt" without missing a beat and like it was scripted, Clate says "hey there's that young kid that has to use power steering to get his car around the racetrack". I still chuckle every time I think of that day, lol.
