Busti, NY (May 7, 2016): Under threatening weather Stateline Speedway by LiteHouse Auto opened with a full card of seven classes with the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models running a thirty lap feature for $2500 to win. At the end of the night Max Blair (Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models) lapped up to fourth place in an exhibition of brute speed, Wyatt Scott collected his first-ever Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model win, David Scott (Wyatt’s Father) collected the laurels at the conclusion of the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod feature, Justin Carlson reigned supreme in the first-ever (anywhere) Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod feature event, Gary Fisher led flag-to-flag in the Fox’s Pizza Street Stock finale, defending Hime Auction Super Sportsmen champion Dan Nocero Jr started his title defense with a win, and defending Bailey’s Towing and Recovery Super Challengers champion Andy Proper prevailed in his feature.
The Fox’s Pizza Street Stocks were the first feature of the new season with Gary Fisher and Brad Church, both veterans of the Street Stocks, leading the 18-car field to Spanky Hall’s double green flags. Fisher led lap one with Church second and Bill Reeves third. At two laps in Reeves was second. On lap four Kyle Wilacher spun into the infield was went a lap down to the leaders before he was able to rejoin the field. At seven laps complete Wes Vallentine spun in traffic, bringing yellow over the field for the first time. Fisher, Reeves, Church, Dave Shagla, and Sam Courson brought the field back to green but Tony Marotto, Jason Black, and Pat Fielding piled up in turn two, again bringing caution over the event. On the next green Brian Crandall spun in turn two, stalling on the racing surface and yet again slowing the field. With five laps remaining Shagla was up to second and challenging for the lead. As the field took the two lap signal Courson again spun, again bringing out yellow. At the while flag Reeves came back to second. Fisher took the checkers with Reeves second, Shagla third, Brad Church fourth, and Bill Best fifth.
The Himes Auction Super Sportsmen started their fifteen lap finale with former champions Ted Kosinski and Dan Nocero Jr on the front row with Kosinski leading the way. On lap two Matt Kosinski came to a halt in turn four, slowing the event under yellow. After green again flew only one lap was scored before Shane Horner spun in turn four, again slowing the race. Kosinski again led the field to green with five laps complete when third running Steve Longo looped his mount in turn four, collecting Mike Kosinski and Matt Kosinski. Mike Genco and Tommy Kosinski both looped in turn one after green. On lap eight Nocero got next to the leader on the back stretch but fell back in turn four. Nocero kept at it and was the leader when caution few after Tom Kosinski spun with four laps to go. Nocero, the defending class champion, handily led the final laps for his first win of the season. Ted Kosinski held on for second with Mike Kosinski third, Steve Longo fourth, and Tommy Kosinski fifth.
Rich Gardner and Steve Kania brought the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models to green with Gardner leading lap one, Kania leading lap two then Gardner back to the lead a lap later. At green Blair quickly sped to the lead but Ward Schell, Jake Finnerty, and John Volpe came together hard on the back straight, bring a red flag over the field. All drivers were ok and the cars again took the green with Max Blair immediately assuming the lead over Gardner, Scott, Chad Valone, and Hackett. On lap nine Scott got by Gardner for second with Valone and Hackett getting by a lap later. With twelve laps in Blair had a quarter lap lead over Scott and was dicing his way through lapped traffic. With ten to go the order was Blair, Scott, Hackett, Valone, and John Lobb. At the checkers Blair had a half lap advantage over Scott with Hackett, Valone, and Lobb filling out the top five. Only four cars were on the lead lap at the end of the thirty laps. Blair collected $2500 for winning the first Super Late Model feature of the 60th Anniversary Season.
The Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods had Troy Carr and Kirk Bradley on the front row with Carr leading the way from the drop of the green. David Scott quickly came to second but then fell behind defending champion Greg Johnson. By halfway the order was Carr, Johnson, Scott, Kirk Bradley, and Butch Southwell. At lap twelve Scott got a great run off turn two and got by both Johnson and Carr. Johnson nearly got back to the lead on lap fourteen but slipped in turn two and fell back behind Carr for a lap until regaining second. At the finish Scott was the winner with Johnson second, Carr third, Butch Southwell fourth, and Michael McGee fifth.
The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models started their feature with Wyatt Scott and Andy Boozel on the front row. Scott led lap one with Boozel half a length back. At halfway the order was Scott, Scott Gurdak, Ryan Scott, Boozel, and David Lyon. With two laps remaining caution flew when rookie Robert Meacham III spun into the turn one wall. For the final two lap dash it was Scott, Ryan Scott, Andy Boozel, David Lyon, and Scott Gurdak. Wyatt Scott went on to his first feature win after his cousin Ryan Scott got next to him at the restart but was unable to compete the pass. Dave Lyon got by Boozel for third and Gurdak wound up fifth.
Justin Carlson led the very first Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod feature anywhere from the drop of green with Kelly Frederes second. Caution flew at four laps complete when Brian Mohawk spun in turn four. The rest of the race was all green with Carlson gaining the historic win over Kelly Frederes, Scott Gurdak. Jason Covey, and Dennis Asel.
The final event of the first event of the 60th Anniversary Season was the Bailey’s Towing and Recovery Challengers. Pete Volpe and Todd Hanlon brought the field to green with Hanlon leading through lap three with defending champion Andy Proper right behind. Proper, the defending champion, was the leader at the end of six laps. With two laps remaining Lindsey Carlson slapped the wall just out of turn four, bringing yellow over the speedway. Blair, Genco, Scott, Groters, Ferringer, and Proper collect opening night wins at Eriez!
Hammett, PA (May 8, 2016): Under cool skies racing for the 2016 season got started at Eriez Speedway with all six classes. At the end of the night Max Blair was dominant in the Plyler Overhead Door Super Late Models, besting the field of fifteen. Twenty cars started the Bonnell Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models with Jason Genco picking up where he left off at the end of last regular season, with a win, leading wire to wire. David Scott put his Ran-Den Excavating E-Mod into Victory Lane. Jace Ferringer collected the win in the Waterford Hotel Economods, his first trip to the Eriez Victory Lane. Brandon Groters is no stranger to the Eriez Speedway Victory Lane and renewed his acquaintance at the end of the Nelson Lynwood Nursery Street Stock finale. The night was capped off with the Kandy’s Gentlemen’s Club Challengers, won by defending champion Andy Proper.
The first feature event of the 2016 season was the Nelson Lynwood Nursery Street Stocks, brought to green by Dan Maxim and Shawn Fawcett with Fawcett leading the way from the start. At lap four Brandon Groters got by Maxim for second. With nine laps into the event Groters was challenging for the lead and was alongside the leader at eleven complete. With the leaders in traffic Groters fell back in line with two laps left but got by in turn two on lap 14, going on to the win. Fawcett had to settle for second with Maxim third, Rob Bates fourth and Gary Fisher fifth.
Jace Ferringer and Devin Henry brought the Waterford Hotel Economods to green but Jason Brightman spun in turn two, causing a complete restart. Ferringer led to turn two on the restart but went high, allowing Henry to get by. Henry then spun in turn four, sliding into the infield and not bringing yellow over the field. Jim Muma then spun in turn two, which did cause the yellow to be displayed. Ferringer again led the field with Josh Mueller second until swinging high in turn four at lap three and allowing Eric Reinwald to get by for the runner-up spot. Henry again spun into the infield at six complete, again not causing caution, but this time Brightman spun in turn two, on the track and thus bringing out the yellow. Ferringer, Reinwald, Mueller, Kyle Fellows, and Terry Akerly brought the feature back to green. Mueller got the second position by the end of lap seven. Fellows spun into the infield with eight complete. With five laps left Akerly spun, this time bringing yellow and a penalty for Henry for rough driving. At green Brian Toto got sideways at turn two and was collected by Geoff Conn. Over the final five laps Reinwald got alongside Ferringer several times but was unable to complete the pass. Ferringer got the win over Reinwld, Mueller, Bob Vogt, and Akerly.
The Ran-Den Excavating E-Mods were brought to green by Butch Southwell and David Scott with Scott grabbing the immediate lead. With five laps complete Mike McGee got by Southwell for second and Shane Crotty was now challenging him for third. With eleven complete the leader caught lapped traffic. With six to go Crotty got by Southwell and a lap later Joel Watson entered the top five. With the white flag flying Steve Simon, who had been spewing smoke for several laps, came to a halt in tun three, bring the sole yellow over the event. For the final lap Scott led with McGee, Crotty, Watson, and Southwell following. The top four finished in that order but Troy Carr got by Southwell on the final turn for fifth.
Wyatt Scott and Jason Genco brought the twenty car Bonnell’s Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models to green with Genco leading Ryan Scott and Wyatt Scott through lap one when caution flew for Jeffrey Hanes, spun in turn two. After green the field only got to lap one when fifth running Mike Lozowski spun in turn two. Genco, Ryan Scott, and Wyatt Scott led the field to another green but Mike Knight spun in turn two with four complete. After green one more lap was complete with Dave Lyon coming to third. In turn three Steve Hollabaugh and Robert Meacham got together for yet another caution. Lyon got to second at green with Mike Pegher up to fourth. Brian Swank spun a lap after green for the next yellow. At halfway the order was Genco, ninth starting Lyon, twentieth starting Pegher, Ryan Scott, and Max Blair. Pegher and Lyon exchanged second and third for several laps with Blair joining the battle with five to go when Hollabaugh and Meacham again spun in three. Genco brought the field to green with Blair coming to second and Pegher to third. Swank again spun, this time in turn four with two laps remaining. For the two-lap dash to the checkers it was Genco, Blair, Pegher, Lyon, and Ryan Scott but Dylan Lewis, Chris Withers, and Mike Lozowski piled up on the entrance to turn three. Meacham again spun with two laps remaining, and pulling pitside during the caution. Genco then got the win, pulling away from Blair, Pegher, Lyon, and Scott Gurdak.
Russell King and Max Blair brought the Plyler Overhead Door Super Late Model field to green but King was deemed to have “jumped” the start and moved back two spots with the field reset. With Rich Gardner now on pole and Blair outside Blair immediately opened a big lead with Gardner and Greg Oakes following. At three laps complete Gardner looped his mount in turn one, bringing caution over the field. For the restart Blair led Greg Oakes and King to green but five cars piled up hard coming out of turn two, resulting in a red flag. Involved cars were Michael Oakes, Chris Hackett, Darrell Bossard, Bobby Rohrer, and Steve Kania. All were able to restart but Oakes pulled pitside after green. On green Chris Hackett spun in turn four then Bobby Rohrer spun on the next green. When the race again got some green flag laps young Blair opened a lead over King, Greg Oakes, and Chad Wright with Rob Blair coming to fifth at lap seven. With eight laps in Hackett got into the turn one wall. At halfway Blair had a quarter lap lead with Greg Oakes now second and King third, Rob Blair fourth, and Wright fifth. At nineteen laps Rob Blair, King and Greg Oakes were fighting for second when King slammed the front straight wall. Bump Hedman and Bobby Rohrer came together hard in turn three at the same time King was wrecking. With six to go green was again flying with Rob Blair challenging Greg Oakes for second. Max Blair went on to the win over Greg Oakes, Rob Blair, Chad Wright, and Rich Gardner.
Skip Jackson and Jeff Nunemaker brought the Kandy’s Gentlemen’s Club to green with Casey Burch leading early. By lap four defending champion Andy a Proper was challenging for the lead and took over at lap eight. Proper went on to the win over Burch, Nunemaker, Jackson, and Pat Hanlon.
