FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fries Races to First UFo Semi-Late Win at Clinton County!
(Mill Hall, PA) Andy Fries of Mercersburg, PA turned in perfect performance on Friday night to win the UFo “I-80 Comet” at Clinton County Motor Speedway. Fries won both his heat race and then fought off the challenges to take the $1,000 to win UFo Semi-Late feature. The results of the event has set up a very tight point race for this first-year tour.
J.R. Toner, Tom Krape, Fries and Mike Smith won the four qualifying heats for the 30 cars that signed in. The most recent UFo Semi-Late winner Robbie Black and Eric Irvin, who was the point leader going into the event, split the consolation wins.
The redraw put Fries and Joe Lusk on the front row. Fries immediately jumped out to the lead, but soon found fifth starting Ralph Morgan, Jr. racing him for the lead. Morgan’s first attempt to win the race fell short on lap 8 when a broken spring sent him to the pits.
The restart found Fries leading Lusk, Kyle Lee, Smith and Black, who had already advanced from his 16th starting position. A second restart was required after the cars of Nick Loffredo, Todd Snook and L.C. Powers came together in the first turn. The caution allowed Morgan enough time to fix his suspension issue without losing a lap.
On the next lap after the second restart, a seven car incident occurred when the top runners made contact, sending Lee, Smith, Devin Hart, Dillan Stake and T.J Watson to the pits, with Black and Snook going to the pits and to the rear. On the restart, Fries lead Lusk and 17th starting Eric Irvin. Irvin’s strong run was foiled with a flat tire sending him to the rear also.
The race then went for a long period of green flag racing, with Fries leading the way. One by one, Morgan advanced from his rear restart position and found himself back in contention for the win in the final eight laps. The final caution of the 33-lap race appeared on lap 30, giving Morgan his final chance at the win.
Fries proved to be the strongest crossing the finish line first, followed by Morgan, Luke Hoffner, John Myers and 18th starting Andrew Yoder. Krape, 23rd starting Brad Myers, 19th staring Tom Vilello, Lusk and Irvin completed the top ten.
With three different winners in three races, the point lead for the UFo Semi-Late championship also now sees its third leader after three events. Rance Garlock, Black and Fries have taken the three wins, while Garlock, Irvin and Ralph Morgan Jr. have been the point leaders. Morgan now leads by just three points over Irivn. Todd Snook followed in third, just one point behind Irvin.
The UFo Championship continues its trek through 2016 with the “Shawn McGarvey Championship” SuperNova event on Sunday, May 29 at Dog Hollow Speedway. The UFo Super Late Models will race 48 laps for $4,000 to win and $300 to start. 24 to 30 Super Late Model cars will start the feature according to the overall car count. The UFo Semi-Lates will race for 33 laps for $1,000 to win and $140 to start.
