For years, I have heard and believed that you have to have lots of passing to have a great race.

Last night that was proved to be incorrect as I watched i very exciting race without a pass for the lead.

I was at Lorain County Speedway for the ISMA Supermodifieds.  "Liquid" Lou Cicconi took off on a run that was incredible.

He had everything under control and was setting a blistering pace.  Only one problem, Mike Ordway, Jr was right on his tail.

This battle lasted 80 laps with Ordway tryinb everything he could to wear Cicconi down.  All 4 of Cicconi's rotors were glowing red as he held Ordway off.

As this battle was going on, teammates Rob Summers and Mike Lichty were within striking distance of the lead pair.

About lap 80 disaster struck, something broke on Cicconi's car and he drifted to a stop on the infield.  On the restart Qrdway was flying.

With about 10 to go, Summers was within striking distance.  He got one last chance on the final lad in turn4 but it wasn't to be and Ordway picked up the win.

One of the best races I have seen in a long time.  Four cars with a legitimate chance of winning battling under a blanket for most of 100 laps.

Gotta love those Supermodifieds.

Why do I like racing ? Well the colors are bright and there is a lot of movement, so it holds my attention.

In my opinion supermodified hot laps are exciting! I can see what you're saying though, side by side racing and passing is great of course but I think you can still have an exciting race with guys up front running nose to tail. The thing for me they've got to be close enough to strike, the more they spread apart you lose excitement. I'm counting the days until the supers come to Jennerstown, that should be one of the best shows of the year.

What makes a good race?

I like to watch fast, quality equipment driven by drivers who know how to race, seldom if never make mistakes or do stupid things, because of lack of emotional control, experience or skill.  It doesn't matter to me what their racing if quality is presented on the track, but it's more fun to watch fast.

A nice facility that runs a concise show, good drivers, and a track with more than one groove.

Tony I know what you mean,  I am looking at the Jennerstown date as well.  But I have a 4 way conflict that night and I have to pick 1.  King's Royal at Eldora, BRP Modifieds at PPMS, Nostalgia at Lernerville, and ISMA at Jennerstown.  Decisions, decisions.  I haven't seen Jennerstown since it was paved, yeah it's been a while.

The availability of passing.  Two cars battling, but the second place car not being able to get the advantage is fine, if there is a real chance that the second place car can pass. If the second place car stays within striking distance as long as he runs exactly the same line as the leader, and maybe even show the leader his nose in another line, but not actually pass, it's still just watching traffic go around in a circle.

The Lernerville sportsman class has gone from good racing to watching traffic go around in a circle.  The outcome is basically set by lap 5, yawn.

My dad drove late models in the early 70's at North Hills, Butler, Mercer, Blanket Hill, and occasionally Tri City. We won the last late model track championship at Blanket Hill.

A bunch of great drivers in good equipment. A race that can be won by 10 drivers. One such example would be the Penn Ohio series..

Fire all your guns at once.

I might be biased because when I first started following racing Jennerstown and Motordrome were in their heyday and I kind of grew up on that but I really love the supers at J-town. If I remember correctly the last time they were there they ran double features. Chris Perley won the first feature and dominated. He started last or almost last for the second feature and just absolutely shredded the entire field and took the second feature as well. Watching him work the whole way from the back to the front was amazing.
