Satterlee Holds of Fierce Challengers to Win UFo “Renninger 33” at Port Royal
(Port Royal, PA) –Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, PA collected $4,290 in winning the prestigious “Butch Renninger 33” for UFo Super Late Models Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway. This was Satterlee’s second “Renninger” win as well as his second UFo win in 2016, happening at the same venue.
A prime field of 38 UFo Super Late Models invaded the ½ mile “Palace of Speed, “ setting up four competitive heat races. Mike Lupfer, Mason Zeigler from 5th, Keith Barbara from 7th with a last lap pass, and Waylon Wagner divided the heat race wins. Trent Brenneman and Andy Haus won the consolation events to set up the 25 car grid.
The redraw of the top 12 qualifiers put Satterlee and Wagner on the front row. Satterlee blasted out to the lead with Nick Dickson soon finding the second position. Satterlee began to build up his lead, while seventh starting Keith Barbara was working his way forward. Under the green flag run, Barbara appeared to have the fastest car on the track as he overtook Dickson for second on lap 11 and then began to track down Satterlee. On lap 15, the first of four cautions appeared when Zeigler hit the outside wall and slowed. At this point Satterlee lead Barbara, Dickson, Dan Stone and Kenny Moreland.
On the double file restart, Satterlee surged into the lead as Barbara appeared slightly slower than before. Dickson was shuffled back into the field with Moreland, Coleby Frye and Jeremy Miller advancing to third through fifth. Barbara picked up his pace again under green flag conditions and overtook Satterlee for the lead on lap 22 when Satterlee slightly lost momentum in the second turn. Behind them Frye had moved into third over Moreland. Satterlee charged back immediately to race Barbara for the lead while 16th starting Dylan Yoder moved into fourth behind Frye just before the caution flag appeared on lap 23 for a spinning Mike Mort.
On the restart, Barbara shot into the lead with Satterlee in hot pursuit. With Barbara slightly slower after the cautions, he and Satterlee fought for the lead util lap 25 when Satterlee gained control. Another caution appeared on lap 28 when Dickson spun in the fourth turn.
The initial restart proved to be a controversial point of the race. As Satterlee zoomed into the lead again, Frye raced underneath Barbara, and the two made side-by-side contact going into the first turn. As both cars scooted up the banking locked together, Barbara hit the outside wall ending his night with a broken front suspension.
On the second double file restart with Satterlee and Frye on the front row, Satterlee bolted to the lead. Frye got a strong run down the back straight, and took the lead for a moment with a slide job in turn three. Frye then slide high, losing momentum giving Satterlee back the lead for good. Satterlee lead the rest of the 33 lap feature winning $3,300 plus $990 in lap money.
Frye spent the remaining laps holding off Yoder with the tow finishing second and third. Chad Hollenback moved into fourth on the final restart and held that position until the finish with Dan Stone taking over fifth on lap 29 to claim that finish position. Moreland, 17th starting Trent Brenneman, Miller, Lufper and 21st starting Tim Smith, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
The UFo Championship Challenge continues on Sunday, September 4 at Dog Hollow Speedway. The “Connor Bobik Make-A-Wish 126” will pay $4,000 to win for the UFo Super Late Models.
