If I had to guess, being that early, it was an insurance issue. Are you saying you were there before the pits opened and had to go back out and sign in? I can see not wanting cars running before people have signed paperwork.
I also saw others dealing with the old dude on the quad though. 100% agree he was acting WAY beyond any authority he had. Was on some ridiculous power trip. Stupid.

Likely Smokey Schemp, the pit steward, and he does have the authority to tell you anything he wants you to do or not do in the pits, including goodbye. Show him the respect he demands.... and the respect any one else "old" deserves, and you'll be just fine. If you have a problem with him I highly suggest you skip the Steel City Stampede @ Lernerville, as he is the Pit Steward there also.

I know who Smokey is. It was not him. It was some other guy that thought he had authority.

Likely he did and suffering from Barney Fife syndrome, given a badge for a day. Really not bad usually, likely his stress level was high ....and yours likely too if first time there. I thought the only gaff was not shooting down them friggin drones!
