are the osw or the racesaver sprints allowing the use of a gm 604 motor?  i thought they were experimenting with this idea several years ago.

the crate sprint program was developed using the 602 engine and it does compete very well

it lacks just a bit to be a solid front runner against local OSW's but it was theorized that the 604 would be on the other side of the normal available power.

being it is a blend concept the 602 was the logical choice

there are 604 crate sprints in Florida and possibly other areas but the 602 is the most common "crate" sprint engine for spec sprint cars

I wonder what GM'S share is in all this crate crap ? Why has ford and Chrysler not followed suit ? The amount of motors that have been released has to be in the thousands. The quality control has to be in a broad range related to horsepower and torque readings.

Not sure about TMS but they were permitted last year at Mercer and I don't think there is any reason to think that would be changed this year

. The reason is , they would not be the same ..... The Hp or torque would be different or weight . The whole purpose was to make ALL ENGINES the same

don't be suprised that mercer follows suit with the lack of car count last year and many of the guys moving up to 410s

Don't think so, as they have already announced they are opening up their rules a bit to be closer to what is run at Fremont-Attica!!

Isn't that the foundation of racing going back to the moonshine NASCAR days? American manufacturers pitted against eachother in chassis differences, powertrain differences.  If you are going to force guys to run crates okay, but give them some choice as to what crate motor you want GM, Ford, etc....

Speedmon, there would be no way that they would be the same . You can have any sticker / decal , mustang - corvette - intrepid - Camaro , camery , etc . But motor is all the same , all even w no advantage , the foundation of crate racing . Super Lates are open to all & look at what it cost for a motor ....42 to 45 grand just for the engine . That is what "open" rules creates , the cubic dollar wins . Cars that are competitive are upwards of 80,000 ! No thanks , Chevy 604s run well enough to be fun & entertaining without being unaffordable for normal people that work and aren't rich

Ford and Chrysler could easily create a crate motor with let's just say 355HP and x amount of torque. For them that is nothing more than a cam grind away. I say the weight issue would be a bigger problem. But again, it is not a hurdle that the other manufactures could not overcome.

For whatever the reason Ford and Chrysler have given the ball to chevy and let's them run with it. Ford has gotten into the crate motor for the eco boost and 5.0, and yes others, just curious as to why.

Motor builders that are part of the few on a list of authorized rebuild centers have to just eat as much crate as they possibly can.

It would be a mess if other manufacturers started competing in the crate game. Ford would make theirs have 5 more hp than Chevy, then Chevy would create an updated "605" or something to get the edge back. Use your imagination from there. $$$$$

I agree. I'm all for open competition in racing. Crate racing is a choice people make when they choose NOT to race in an open class. Two different concepts. I wasn't arguing that I like crate classes, only that opening them up just turns them into the open/limited classes that already exist. I think the only reason guys run crate over other limited engine classes is the WAY higher purses and unified rules.

Intake restriction would have evened a 604 out with 305's......since wet sumps were a problem back in my day, what has changed to make the bottom end more durable???

Ford has a viable 347 crate motor that is used on asphalt. The GM motor distributors have too strong a hold on the dirt crate series for them to allow it.
