Smith Brothers Switch Positions up Front, Hicks and Horton Return to Victory Lane, and Duty wins first race at Waynesfield.
This Saturday June 16 marked the eighth straight weekend of racing for the ¼ dirt track located in Waynesfield, Ohio. Watching as the fans entered the grounds the drivers were gearing up to provide the excitement they were looking for. What they got was two, three, even four wide racing a flip and some after race “meetings”, all night long.
Up first this night were our Mini-Sprints who were racing for extra money in the purse and a Dash for Cash put up by race track parts supplier B-Rad Racing Supplies and by the action put out on the track, the drivers really wanted his money. Winning the heat races for the evening were Becca Stiefel, Jon Cottrell, and Hud Horton. Hud also picked up an extra $100 for his victory in the Dash. Lined up for the feature Jon Cottrell and Becca Stiefel would bring the field to the green flag with the 14 year Becca taking the early lead in the A-Main. Legging out over the rest of the field she was brought back to second place when the 0 of Herschel Wills lost power and coasted of the track from turn four on lap seven. Hud Horton looking for the clean sweep was in second in front of Ron Durrer, Chris Smalley, and Josh Yenser rounding out the top-five. After the caution she continued to pace the boys until lap twelve when she got a little loose off of four and with Hud right on her tail, he took the lead. Then on the next lap, 13, the 18 of Todd Keen went low trying to complete a pass on Keith Crabtree but bounced off the berm on the bottom spinning himself out but not damaging the car or any others. After that the final seven laps of the feature went green and Hud hit every corner perfectly keeping the wins for the night all to himself with Becca Stiefel in second and Chris Smalley in third.
Second class of the evening belonged to our Non-Wing Sprint Cars and Dustin Smith and Cody White were hailed as the victors in the preliminary events this Saturday night. These two same people would be chosen by fate to be the front row of the feature with the 26 of White on the inside and 77 of Dustin Smith on the outside. On the start it would be Dustin taking the lead with Cody White on tow and Mike Dunlap in third until contact with Corey sent him spinning in turn two and sending him to the rear of the field. After that the drivers got their act together and gave a show to all of the fans in the stands with the 26 of Cody White the meat in the Smith Brothers sandwich until Corey got by and got right behind his brother Dustin. It would stay this way for a while until the 13th lap when White went low to pass a lap car hit the berm in one sending him around but kept his sense about him enough to keep his foot in the gas only putting the car back in the fifth position. Shortly after that Corey used another lapped car for a pick to get by Dustin for the lead and win. At the twenty lap distance it was Corey, then Dustin, with Mark Hery moving into the three spot after passing John Nelson with two laps to go.
“I want to dedicate this win to my parents, it’s their anniversary tomorrow and Fathers Day is tomorrow as well” said Corey. “My son was here as well and that makes this even more special.” “I loved the track tonight, it was a very racy track, one of the raciest around.” “They do a great job prepping the track and it is a fun place to race.” “I want to thank Smith Racing and Foreman Sheet Metal Products for all of the help they give us.”
Third in the program would be the Modifieds and Michael Hohlbein and Darryl Banks would grab the checkered flags in the heat races to help set the A-Main line up. As the flag man held the green in his hand the first two to pass underneath of him would be Chad Rosenbeck and Steve Duty. Three laps into the feature Michael Hohlbein and pole sitter Rosenbeck came together in three and four battling for position and the 6 of Hohlbein would be the worse of the two spinning out putting him to the tail. Steve Duty though was still out front looking for his first win in a Modified. One lap later the 36 of Brandon Vaughn looped the car in one after weaving the back end of the car down the entire front stretch; fortunately and luckily, everyone missed him as he was running in the top-ten and there were a lot of maneuvers to do this. At the half-way mark Duty was still in the lead but the pressure from second place Darryl Banks was getting heavier with every lap. Three laps later the caution would come out for Jon Henry who spun by himself in four setting up another seven lap run to the finish. Using the high line around the track Duty kept the lead eyeing the front bumper of Banks occasionally but never seeing anything else. Banks, Stan Smith, and Chris Ullery all followed Duty to the checkered flag.
“I want to dedicate this win to Luke Castle”, said Duty. “His Dad is a huge supporter of mine with Castle’s Mixins and Fixins as well as Castle’s Mini Barns.” “This win is for his sisters as well, Hailey and Audree. “I want to thank my crew, they are at the shop Monday thru Friday and I wouldn’t be able to race anywhere without them.” ‘I really need to thank my wife for letting me do this as well, this is the most we get to see each other because of work and family so it makes the win much sweeter.”
The finale of the event belonged to the Trucks this time and they were not ready to disappoint to all of the fans sitting in the grandstands. Starting off the night with wins in the heats were Eric Sutter, Danny Kelly, and Derrick Noffsinger. For the second straight event a truck turned over but this time on the first lap it was Dave Voisard and the wreck was very violent looking. Thankfully with the help of our track EMT’s Dave was OK but the truck was far from that. When the field got back going after the red flag 18th place starter Mike Hicks already sat in fifth after a daring move driving up through the middle. Four laps later Tom Stauffer and Danny Kelly spun together in one and two bring out the yellow once again. After that the race was now on with the top-six nose to tail side by side for the next seven laps until Hicks finally got by leader Scott Fisher after Pete Zuppardo and Derrick Noffsinger had made several attempts at the point. Once the 33 of Mike Hicks got into the “clean air” he was able to leg out a huge lead leaving all others behind taking his second win of the year over Noffsinger, Fisher, Zuppardo, and Randy Crossley.
“The track was in excellent shape tonight and there was no dust to impair my vision driving.” “I really need to thank my family for helping out and my sponsors Swartz Contracting and Service Master at Your Service.” “There are a lot of fast trucks out there and I had to drive very hard tonight,” said the driver of the number 33 Truck.
