Record Setting Stock Car Race Announced

For Immediate Release

August 17, 2017 (Sandy Lake, PA) The Homak Penn Ohio Stock Car Series Director, Shaun Hooks and Sharon Speedway General Manager, Dave Willoughby are pleased to announce their plans for a huge Stock Car race to take place at Sharon Speedway in 2018.  The race will be 75 laps in length and is scheduled for late June of 2018.  It will pay a whopping $10,000 to win.  It is scheduled to be a time trial show and will follow the format used by the All Star Sprint Series.

“Dave has always been great to work with through the years,” according to Hooks, who has held several series races in the past at the track located just over the Ohio border.  “There might have been a little shock initially when I approached him with the idea, but we are both excited about the potential for this event.”

“The racing has been incredible at Sharon Speedway this season,” Willoughby said. “Our new surface has really paid dividends.  The race teams love it, and it shows in the way they have supported us.  Shaun has done an excellent job building his series the last several years.  They often bring 40 or 50 cars to a Series’ event,” said Willoughby.  “I don’t know what $10,000 to-win will bring; that’s part of the excitement.  We understand that racers and fans have a lot of choices when it comes to what tracks and series they support.  We want to continue to bring new and better events to Sharon Speedway.”

As soon as it becomes available, there will be more information released regarding this event such as sponsors, a complete payoff, rules and the scheduled date.

Great job Penn Ohio. Man, with that kind of money everybody should or will be there! Kudos Sharon for hosting the race. Good to see everyone working together for a change.

Wow! With the regular Penn/Ohio races drawing near 50 cars at Sharon's races it's a good possibility that this race could draw 75-100 stocks from across the USA.

Shaun Hooks gets it.  He is a racer that promotes FOR the racer.  Local tracks and governing officials need to take note.

being the news for this race is out. I would think word of it is going to spread quickly. First question many are going to have is what the pay will be threw the field. If this race has a good pay back I am going to ask and say what others think of a car count ?  70+ cars would not surprise me at all. I wonder if they can put a hit counter on there rules page on the web site ?

So, if you truly think it would draw so many... maybe consider a non qualifiers race... look, one guy wins the big $$$ but if you pay back through the field and maybe have a $500 to win non qualifiers race, that may be even more attractive! One event, two features, two possibilities to win, great for drivers, great for fans... assuming you keep the show moving :)

Stock rules vary so widely from track to track and region to region. I wouldn't count on anybody but the same 50 or so local/regional guys that always show up at the Penn Ohio events being at this race.

This is a good point.  Also draws attention to a big problem.  Why can't track owners/promoters get together and standardize on a set of rules.  Then taking that one step further, standardize across regions.  This makes sense.  I came from the karting world and when you would go to a local track they would utilzase WKA rules.  When you would go to a national event in South Carolina.. guess what... WKA rules

In much of the country, stock rules are pretty standard. Out west, it's pretty much IMCA country and down south is mostly Nesmith country, and even the unsanctioned tracks in those areas tend to run the same rules as the prevailing sanctions. Thing is, their standardized rules are pretty similar to PPMS' amateur stock rules.

Here in Penn Ohio country, tracks run limited late models pretending to be stock cars. We've deviated pretty far from the idea of what stock cars are supposed to be.

This was my thought exactly. Everyone has their own set and if it isn't cost effective for guys to make major changes to their cars then they won't come. They have no trouble getting 50 cars for $1,000-$2,000 so I really don't think putting up 10,000 is going to blow the regular penn Ohio shows numbers away. I think it's cool for those guys but Sharon's attendance is down a lot this year, they already pay stock $700 weekly for 24+ cars which is double most places and I don't see this really packing the stands any more than a regular night. The Apple fest 100 was never too great attendance wise. There are really good cars and drivers in this division but I think $5,000 to win would probably get the same result in this situation. About the only regional guy I haven't seen at Sharon is Groters. I really do hope it takes off though and becomes an annual big time race. Only time will tell

It is why I made mention of a hit counter on there rules page. Some parts I believe they are called pro stocks and I think the rules are somewhat close. I'm sure Shawn Hooks and the people from Sharon have already had that discussion. A show of this size and also the class involved is going to take quite a few discussions with who ever is going to be the tech crew.
