I am starting to put together a list of eligible drivers for the annual 'Western PA Rookie of the Year" award.   This will be the 50th annual award and quite frankly, this may be the worst year for rookie drivers I have ever seen!!   I may have enough drivers to fill up the ballot when i send it out the first of the year, but few, if any,  of them really deserve the award. Most are just running around at the back of the pack and not really "racing".   So just case I and the members of my panel have missed any deserving driver, I thought I would send this out to see if anyone on here has any suggestions of drivers who might be considered!!

Please keep in mind that to be eligible a driver must be a "raw" rookie, not just a driver moving up in class.  Drivers in any class from Mini-stocks to 410 Sprint Cars are eligible as long as they race at any track in the western PA and border areas.  If you know of a driver who is eligible, please give me his name, class he runs in and track(s) the driver races at.  Then I will check out his results, point standings and such.

THANK YOU & GOOD RACING!!!

Walt

Dan Ferry Jr. won the 358 Class at Dog Hollow this year as a rookie in that division .

How dare people spend their time and money to perform below your standard?

I hope you feign sincerity when you "honor" this year's recipient.

yeah if ya try really really hard you can if your having a bad day read the intent wrong.   :)

He did not comment on "Quality", what he wrote was about quantity.   :)

I'm not criticizing you your usually very level headed on here even if you explain how I'm full of it.  Try reading it again with a kindly mind, I know you can do it.   :)

edit:  Sadly there ain't enough new rookie racers this year.  :(

Is that the same Dan Ferry Jr who ran Charger/Strickly Stocks at Challenger? If so wouldn't be eligible for this award.

Walt a new car racer can have as much as 15 or more years racing experience kart racing stuff with all kinds of hp to weight ratio, at speeds well over 100 mph with 120+ not being uncommon.  There's the same possibility with mWotor cycle racers dirt and pavement.   A 360 sprint Walt gives the driver same feel and actual point to point acceleration as what can be given from a UAS racing kart.  The only difference being distance traveled during the acceleration.  Walt shouldn't learning how to race be part of being an actual rookie?  Someone entering any type of car with 10+ racing years of experience can hardly be considered a rookie.  I'm only aware of one possible true rookie this year.  i'm not sure about the number they ran mostly with 305's at Lernerville and Mercer.  The all black no lettering with I think pink or off red numbered only on the wing 19R(?).  I went on the web to try to find out the number for sure but wasn't sure of what I found at Mercer points and Lernerville points.

My understanding it there's a couple of guys who never raced anything bought an old car threw an engine in it and went racing.  I think they upgraded their car the last couple of races.  They didn't win anything but without ever racing I don't remember ever them getting into trouble on the track, they used their heads and learned to race getting very much better by the end of the year.

I don't know them never even met them or saw them my few times in the pits this year.  But I got the fan fun of watching them get better all year.  Again sitting here I'm not sure about the number it was the all black old sprint with pink or red/orangish number on the wing and no other stickers of anything on it.

I personally Walt think the driver of that car if what I heard about being a true rookie is correct, with a true rookie team and very low budget team is deserving of consideration and may be the only true rookie out their this year.

Rookie of the year Walt shouldn't always have to come from the high dollar 6th generation racer, but it seems to be that way every year.   It's your thing Walt and you do it the way you do it.  But when's the last time the honor was not won by a high dollar already well know racer brought up through karts or something else or from a racing family name?   My guess your answer will be if I paid attention to who has got the honor in the past it was even hypothetically last year.   :)

Do you have some sort of points system for Rookie of the year?  I figure you do.

Would you share it?  I can understand your not sharing it because of not wanting to get into a big debate about the system, how it works or should work.

I'm not sure how that could've be misread, but congratulations, you've done it.

RIGHT!!!   But facts are facts!!  Very poor rookie class this year in both quantity and quality.  Goes hand in hand with the low car counts most tracks are experiencing!!

Walt, I realize you have been doing this for many, many years. Have you ever kept track of the careers of some of the driver's that have won the title ? I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say ' the captain' Lou Blaney as the person that went on to the longest and most productive threw all his years of dirt racing. Just putting it out there if anyone else wants to chime in...Also any winner Walt that never came back for year 2 ?

Lou started his career back about 1959, a long time before my award started in 1968!!  But both Dave and Dale won the award along with Ed Lynch, Jr., Bob Felmlee, Kevin Bolland, Dave Murdick and Jared Miley.  There have been a couple of winners who had a very short career, but off the top of my head, Johnny Linder, Gus' son, may have been the only one who never ran a second year.

GOOD RACING!!!

Walt
