Don't know how many acres is actually there but it seems a little steep to me?...I know CNB Speedway in Clearfield started out a couple years ago at $400,000 and now it's been at around $275,000 for awhile now and still didn't sell...I believe there's alot of acres there too...

I looked at Mercer via google maps.  It looks like and is it true the track may not own a large piece or property next to the pit road now used for parking, if the track is all in the township and none of it is in the city of Mercer.

https://www.google.c...5!4d-80.2397852

edit:  Click on the link, go to satellite view, zoom in some and you will see the city line includes all of the parking west of the pit road.  Either all of the track is in the township with township taxes and elected officials or only part of it is in the township and multiple jurisdictions would have to be dealt with running the track.  I doubt the city of Mercer would give them a hard time using the land for parking, but you never know with elected representatives.

I would guess they will have to have at least one race of some kind there each year, even a kart race to keep the land able to be used for a race track in the future.  If they skip a year in some states they loose their grandfathered in status and have to start the process of permission all over again.  If that's the case in PA, I expect to see at least one race, tractor pull, kart race or something there next year.

edit:  no I ain't got a clue about legal stuff, just winging it because I slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night and I ain't got nothing better to do hoping the rains don't mess up racing today..  :)

My money says its priced to sell to a developer. Way overpriced for a racetrack and priced ideally for a developer.  He has been offered multiple times to sell at reduced cost to keep a track and declined. That or I was lied to in two instances. My bet is I was not lied to though.

I hope they are open next year.  It's been every Saturday there for years for me and they are all from my experience nice people there.  Anything reasonable ever asked for from them was given and I appreciated it.

From what I have heard he's not looking to sell to a developer. This is an established business, with a loyal clientele. Turkey has added life to the place. If I had the $850k and assurances that the current staff would stay, I'd do it.

My dad drove late models in the early 70's at North Hills, Butler, Mercer, Blanket Hill, and occasionally Tri City. We won the last late model track championship at Blanket Hill.

Mike Dutko has corrected me in another thread, and it looks like he would like a developer to buy the place. That's a real shame too. I have a lot of good memories from that track. Including when my wife and I were out for a drive, found ourselves near Mercer on a Saturday and went to the track. We may have been trying to go to Sharon, I don't remember that well.  We found our church on the way to the races too. We went by the church, my wife said, "that's our church," and to make a long story short she was right.

I hate to see any race track close, and I rarely go to  Mercer anymore, however, if  you owned a piece of property and were offered $800K by a developer and $200K to keep it as a race track, what would you do?  Talk is cheap when you're dealing with someone else's money.  It's called Capitalism.  The same thing may happen with PPMS, which would be very sad for me, but I understand the situation.

From what I understand is there's been offers to keep it a race track (albeit less than he was asking at the time, but not much) and he's just not interested in that. He has had no offers to develop it, he's just hoping that he does if he holds out long enough.

Regardless of the price it will be tough to find anyone that has the funds to purchase the place to keep as a track knowing well youll never get your investment back. If it were to be financed it will be a constant up hill battle to keep open. The problem is there is too many tracks and the car count is thinned out everywhere. The fans of today arent like the fans of the old days. Now people would rather go drink beer on their side by side then pay to go to the races.

It will never sell as a racetrack for that kind of money in my opinion. Maybe not even for half that. I don't see any huge developments on the horizon there either. I'm told that he won't consider leasing it to anyone on a year to year basis. It would be a tremendous undertaking for anyone to bring Mercer back to profitability at this point. It's been driven so far down. Mr. Altman was never able to do that. It's almost like he doesn't want anyone else to either. It's a shame for sure. I hope the fans and racers there find another venue to support. The sport can't stand to lose them.

If they don't open its a blow to region 410 racing on the weekly basis. Would have to think Sharon or another track may give 410s a shot if Mercer doesn't run.

My guess is that if Mercer doesn't open, Sharon will grab the 410 Sprints!!   But where does that leave the big block Modifieds??   Maybe Sharon could run a four class program with both and two support classes, most likely RUSH Mods and Stocks.

A Mercer closing would also kill the 358 Mods and the 305 Sprints outside of the Racesaver cars at Thunder Mt. and to the east.   And then who knows what is going to happen at Pittsburgh??   None of this is good for the sport locally!!

Walt
